We had quite an early train to catch on Friday 24th Feb for our trip from Dong Hoi to Hue, the weather was about perfect 24 degrees so not too hot. The Sun Spa resort was a great place to stay and we would certainly go back there. I think a good tip if you don't mind a small addition for commision is to book your train tickets though the hotel you are staying in, we did and the tickets turned up a couple of hours later, it would have cost a lot more to get a taxi to go and buy them. I think they added on £1 per ticket so well worth it, the tickets were only £3 each for the 93 mile journey. The train journey went well it was supposed to leave at 0801 but we got away about 0820 so not too bad. No real dramas, a woman was fast asleep in our seats when we got on, but a quick nudge and she jumped out no problem.
We arrived in Hue and whow it was really hot 32 degrees and hot sunshine. We checked in at the Huong Giang Hotel in Hue and as
we booked with Agoda we had been upgrading our room for the past 3 or 4 months at no extra cost or cancellation charge, we got a brilliant deal on the "Governors Suite" for $90 a night which is supposed to be £300 a night! So we were amazed when we opened the door to our room for £60 a night we a dining table and 4 chairs, a lounge coffee table 4 chairs, 2 chairs in the bedroom, 2 Flatscreen 32 inch TV's, A bar area, A dressing room, lights in the wardrobe, a sauna, huge power shower, a jacuzzi bath, a massive king size bed. A walk round balcony with a water feature, and of course fantastic full length windows with a view over the perfume river! Oh and a fax machine. and Wi-Fi, and DVD player, beautiful lights all over the suite. Pretty good value! The hotel itself is pretty big in a brilliant location, but the grounds could do with a bit of maintainance and we didn't get very good reviews of the food, so we ate out. Eating out is pretty cheap with Vietnamese Wine and 2 courses for £10.00 both nights great meals we
are very impressed with Vietnamese food.
Because of it's location Hue has quite a lot of rain so we were pretty lucky to get a really hot day and could have a swim in the hotel pool and then watch the fabulous sunset following by a cooler day perfect for walking around.
So on Saturday we went to the Citadel and so glad we didn't attempt to do that on the Friday afternoon, and it was far bigger than we expected and we wouldn't have been able to see half of it in 32 degrees. The Citadel is very impressive and hard to believe it was still being used for the King up to the war. It was badly damaged then and also if that wasn't enough it was hit by a typhoon after that. But a lot of it is still standing and a lot has been repaired. The size of the place is hard to describe as it really is massive inside, and takes a couple of hours to walk around. It is now a UNESCO Heritide Site and you can see why, fabulous buildings and history, and is a must see if you come to
Hue, in fact it is why everyone comes here in the first place. There is not much else to do around the City there are a couple of streets full of resturants that everyone heads for which is great as it's all there for you in one place. There is a large indoor market but unfortunately you do get quite a bit of hassle, so much so, it is difficult to stay in the market for too long. Shame really. So most people just stay for 1 or 2 nights. We are glad we came here though it is worth a visit and our room has been just fantastic. We are off to Hoi An tomorrow on the train again, so we will catch up there later. Our Hotel didn't book train tickets like the other one, but just across the road is a bar called the DMZ bar it is in the lonely planet guide and they have a travel desk adjacent/inside and again for a very small fee the girl gets on her scooter and hops down to the station to get your tickets, job done. Much easier than getting a taxi and then struggling at the ticket
desk.
