So finally the sun came out and we had a day on the beach. It absolutely threw it down last night, a nanosecond after we got back to the hostel. We’d have got soaked to the skin. Phew! We just chose the right moment between the showers to peg it back from the beach, where we ate OK food. Nice chat with an older guy, travelled a lot in India. Interesting. The food didn’t agree with Sam so much, but luckily we were just planning to go back to the beach bar and use their sun beds and bathroom facilities, so she was fine, although was not interested in breakfast apart from tea. I was interested in mine, 2 fried eggs in a baguette, yum!
We got to the beach just in time for the last 2 sun beds with cushions, or it would have been a bum-numbing experience. We burnt a bit although under a parasol. Lovely sea, nice vibe. Although the score is you don’t have to pay for the beds but are expected to buy drinks and food, no one hassles you at all. We could have been there all day and not bought anything. There were
plenty of vendors, no problem buying fruit etc and eating them on the sun beds. We had 3 rounds of drinks but had to go up to the bar and and ask each time. For anyone coming to Phu Quoc, we were at Jojo’s Bar, to the left of Rory’s Bar when looking at the sea. Rory’s Bar is v v popular but also v v expensive, twice the price for drinks. Great vibe but you could be anywhere almost, lots of non-local staff.
Had a message from my uni buddy Ann, she and her husband David will be in Sihanoukville next week too, not far from us, so we can meet up and watch the rain together! That will be great fun as we haven’t seen each other for ages. We can walk along Otres Beach from our straw hut to their swankier pad.
When I got back to the hostel, leaving Sam to watch the sunset, they said the water wasn't working in the showers, so I either had to wait a bit or use the dorm facilities as they had big buckets with a scoop for emergencies. How much fun was that! Cool/cold water but
honestly, you are done in about 30 seconds, if nothing technical like hair washing needs doing. There is a long list of rules up in the room. Seems that drugs and alcohol are absolutely fine, as long as you don’t disturb your neighbours. Or hit them/each other.
Before going out to dinner we bought our bus tickets for Cambodia. Different information, now we had a choice of 3 times. We chose the 8.20 departure, arriving 6pm. Maybe...... The cost was 23$ but we paid in dong. The girl explained the procedure for office/visa/border/minibus to us for the 3rd time, mainly it was the same as the other 2 people had said except we might have to change minibus in Kep or Kamopt. We read that to mean we wil have to, OK as long as we don’t have to pay again if we do, or wait too long. She also said we might arrive at 5pm. Nah! Bet we don’t! Visa cost with bribes should be 35$. We are happy to pay the bribe as the alternative could be our bags thrown off the minibus in no man’s land and being left to wait/blag our way onto another. Or
we could just stay there, like Tom Hanks in The Terminal. I can see Monday coming like a train I don’t really want to get on.
Like homing pigeons, we found ourselves at a cocktail happy hour place which looked like having a pleasing selection of fried items. Sam thought these would do her good. They did, as did the 3 mojitos we shared. Coco Bar had a special offer, like us on Facebook and get a free shot, so we did that too. We liked Coco Bar a lot by this stage. It was also popular with quite a lot of mosquitos and a cockroach the size of a mars bar, and that was just the one we saw. We kind of settled in for the duration. Sam shared smoking equipment with the guy next to us, it he declined a filter tip. ‘I am a wiking’. His wife, who shared his rollup, was clearly one too.
Our bill came to £5 each, which we were very satisfied with. And nothing too controversial so we may well be back tomorrow.
