Da Lat is known for many exports throughout Vietnam; Flowers, strawberries, coffee and Weasel Coffee. If you're scratching your head and wondering what Weasel Coffee is you will shit yourself, literally. Weasel coffee is a type of coffee that is collected from weasel shit. Yup. Weasel shit. The weasels are fed coffee and the poop is collected the next day. Washed, dried, stored for six months, washed again and then roasted. I never knew what coffee actually looked like before it is processed into powder form. Coffee looks a lot like a cranberry. The coffee seeds gets its aroma and flavors from being roasted. An un-roasted coffee seed taste like any other seeds. The weasels are fed raw coffee seeds in its fruit form for a day. They are then fed chicken soup the next day and something else the day after that to get its nutritions back on tract. Its unknown to me whether this diet of coffee is healthy for the weasel. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I couldn't really tell the differences between regular coffee and Weasel coffee. A fellow traveler and self proclaimed coffee connoisseur was kind enough to share his feedback. He commented that it was indeed "better than regular coffee, but not good Holland coffee." He is Dutch so I'm assuming there is a little bias there. The cost of Weasel coffee is expensive for local Vietnamese, but it is comparable to a cup of Starbucks coffee: $5 each.
