Sorry John, I just knew I would upset someone with that. And I do agree that the poor Edsel coped more flack than it deserved so before you ring the Ford Drivers Club and have them all start hassling me, I will change it to something more local like a Lada, although I might get Putin complaining. Not so mythical Samarkand!
Thanks for going there, so I don't have to! I've always dreamed of visiting what I'd imagined was a whole city of blue-tiled domes and being transported to some ancient time. And while the domes and the Registan are beautiful (great photos), I'm glad you let us in on all the reconstruction and how the place is rather commercial. Glad you found cold beer and didn't get hit by any falling masonry.

Shattered dreams
Yes we expected to see camels marching over sand dunes and old traders weaving past bags of spices, but got Toyotas screaming along asphalt roads and camera totting tourists gazing into glass front souvenir shops. Damn all those tourists!!! hang on a minute, maybe I am one of them?

Universal language
Hand gestures often come in handy. I don't like riding backwards either so I go through the same motions. Love the beautiful blue domes. Sounds like some of the restoration is in question. Historically this is an incredible part of the world. We are enjoying your journey.

I was going to read the blogs of yours I've missed in chronological order, but I couldn't resist this Samarkand one... it's a place that has fascinated is for a long time. We love train travel too, it's easily out favourite way to travel. Always love your photos, but these ones are super special :)

Thanks. It has been on our hit list for a lloooonnnggg time so it was incredible to finally see it. Standing in front of The Registan is almost as amazing as the Taj, but be warned it is a lot more touristy.
