Back to friendly Thailand and familiar Khao San Road. We had our much-anticipated reunion with Chris and, of course, many beers were had we caught up on the gossip from home. Too many more were had during a crazy night out to Nana Plaza to see the sex shows (!!) with an international group of insane people. What fun! And best of all, the dancers all seemed like they're actually having a good time. Not the desperate, coked-out brand of sex entertainer you see elsewhere but people who are just enjoying themselves and aren't taking work too seriously. I love it! The women here are like the trees that hold the sand on the beach. From a young age they can travel by themselves, ride a motorbike, work at manual labor, flirt with men and run ... read more

2012 - These entries have been copied from emails I sent home in 2001. I can't help but laugh at them now - many years of travelling since have changed our values etc so much. I guess our experiences and expectations now have been shaped by these earlier travels. I'm also pleased to note that my photography skills have improved - very few photos were taken on this trip - maybe too many are taken today with digital cameras..... Jerry and I have been in Thailand now for four days and are enjoying it a lot but we are finding it much harder than Malaysia to find our way around. The main problem is language - nobody speaks any English and to make it harder all the signs are written in squiggly Thai symbols… All part ... read more

Fantastic to see the natural beauty of Thailand: the pale and elegant greenery of the bamboo forest, views of the mountains that border Burma, the rice fields, banana plants and fully-forested hills! Best activity: riding the neck of an elephant, big ears flapping over my legs and holding onto the soft brown head. Next best: river rafting on bamboo platforms then touring a damp and eerie cave. It turned out to be home to a large snake, a massive spider and insects you could put a saddle on and ride. Also numerous smelly bats. Fantastic! The food was terrible but our guides, Nai and Pairo, were fun and enthusiastic. Staying in the Lahu and Lisu villages was about as contrived as I feared but the chance to teach two little girls "Stop In The Name Of ... read more

23 May 2001 Two days ago, I rode the “death train” over the Bridge Over the River Kwai. We were thrown together with 3 young men from Wales, taking a trip before heading off to university, and a Danish couple that had signed up for a tour of the floating market and rose garden and ended up with us at the death museum, crawling through a cave and riding elephants. Such is the way with these 2-day tours – you’re never really sure what it’ll be like. The hook for this tour was the bridge. Of course, the Alec Guinness movie that made the bridge famous is historical fiction, far more about British class sensibility than it was about Imperial Japan’s building of the WWII railway into Burma. In fact, building the bridge itself was a ... read more

16 May, 2001 – Bankok, Thailand So, We're in Bankok. Since we were not able to find local activist/organizers to link up with for volunteer work, we're only staying a short time and so have been in the heart of the city downtown. Bankok is fascinating, fabulous and fierce. It's spiritually enlightened and humbly devout. It's also horribly unjust and economically exploitative. Nearly everywhere you look is an exquisite temple, filled with people from may walks of life (so it seems) making devotions and meditating. so much so that when we'd ride past some awesome-looking edifice and ask the "tuk-tuk" driver what it is, the response was often (essentially) "oh, just another temple". There are more than 400 in the city. Truly astounding. Then, a few blocks away, many people are living under bridges. The tuk-tuk ... read more

Bangkok - We arrived at midnight but the streets are lively until at least 5am. This is good city life unspoiled by a half-assed, slipshod attitude or by people who insist on being asleep by 9pm and up at 5am. I woke up to a whole new Khao San Road! Was my guesthouse moved in the night? The late-night food vendors and street-side cafe tables were replaced by racks of clothes and tables of souvenirs. Wow, we could spend days trying to eat our way around town, tackling Thai soups, noodles, seafood and even RAW shrimp with chili sauce - mmm! Mike observed that the girl who works at the Hello restaurant resembles my cat, so we named her Dixie without her knowing. The locals are good-humored and good-natured. They're playful with each other and polite ... read more

By Rob: When I left Thailand, I was nearly in tears because I knew I would miss it so much. Up to that point in my life and my limited travels, I had never been treated so normally. Back in the summer of 2000, Deanne and I (Rob) headed to Bangkok, Thailand for a trek. In Thailand, we met Ariette, whom we call a good associate or distant friend. Each of us had a unique experience. I hope that the other two share theirs. Anyway, the main thing that I learned in Thailand was that I was an American tourist first and foremost. My clothing, mannerisms, speech, etc. placed me in a category that superseded race and ethnicity. I was totally shocked, especially as a new international traveler at that time. The most poignant experience is ... read more

Geo: 17.8841, 102.747We have been travelling since 25 January. We justspent the last three days in Chiang Mai, NorthernThailand. The pace there was quite hectic but weenjoyed the experience. We overdosed on consumerism ie shopping, eating anddrinking. Chiang Mai is at the base of the Himalayasbut the hills were shrouded in smog. We took a hairraising trip up the hill in a Salom (taxi/ute type... read more
