Walking around the garden this morning I count over 30 flowers coming on my pommegranate tree and a few fruits are already forming. I bike into Phon Thong for a long internet session and start to catch up with this travel blog amongst other things. By the time I get back to the village our builder has started work and Jai's brother Sai from next door is keeping a close eye on things. It was only a matter of time before he threw a wobbly but he doesnt wait long and kicks off late morning. Shouting like it was the end of the world he tellsJai that she might just as well build a wall between our two houses and have done with it. Jai indicates her mother who has never allowed us to build such a wall as she likes to pop back and forwards between the two houses. Because Sai wants a wall she wants one as well now !! Well, they aint getting one !! Problem here is that all of the water from Sai's house roof currently drains into our back garden giving me all sorts of problems with soil washing away. Once we have
finished the rice house we are building a short wall that will stop the water draining here and it will then drain towards Sai's outside kitchen. I have been on to him for a few years now to put guttering on his house to take the water away to the front and into the road but he has been too lazy to do anything about it. I even offered to cover half the cost but I wont be doing that now we are sorted it is his problem alone.
By early evening our builder has made good progress and is above head height all of the way round and with the door frame in place. The door frame raises another Planet Stupid issue however. I was sat watching him work this morning when he first put the door frame into position. I could see right away that he had fixed the bottom of the fraem a lot wider than he had the top of the frame meaning that it was nothing like square. I pointed this out but he just laughed and said that he had checked everything. I said it was obviously wrong and looked quite a long way off.
I am just a farang, what do I know. As he was starting the second course of bricks out came the spirit level again to check the door frame. He was puzzled that when he had the one side of the door square the other side was at a steep angle from the vertical. He tried it the other way around and had the same problem. He stood back scratching his head and I persuaded him to measure the frame again. The bottom of the door was over 4cm wider than the top. Gosh, what a shock ! He put it right and continued...
Jai's son, Boy, had borrowed my bike first thing this morning to take Jai's sister Begat to a neighbouring village so that she could catch a bus to go and stay with her daughter for some time. Jai's other sister Bepat called in this evening to say she was off back to her sons in Bangkok for a while so it is going to be quiet here. Only Mr Moody, the fat bitch and the grand daughter of the devils spawn next door to cope with !!
