Finally...back out sailing.
We've spent too long working on the boat, and it was great to finally be back out sailing and I mean properly sailing... no engine and the boys managed to get four of the sails up,the gib, fore sail, main and mizen, what a great experience.
Our friend Tommy came to visit and was a great help to Drew on the boat, he has his own boat in Langkawi but it's getting repairs done so it's out of action for a while. We motored out of our anchorage at the Yacht Club and managed to get the sails up fairly soon after and headed down the channel and round to Phang Nga Bay which is just stunning, I mean incredibly stunning.
The sailing was very relaxing with perfect conditions, a light wind of maybe 15 knots and perfect seas, we were just gliding along and I was impressed that we managed to get Malmuirie up to 7.9 knots. We passed many islands in the bay and had the most impressive sunset when we set to anchor.
After a fun night of cooking up dinner and having a few beers we decided to head out exploring in the morning, one of Ko Khao Ping Kan
James Bond Island the island had many tourist boats so we headed for there to see what the attraction was. We brought out the spare dinghy up for Tommy and the boys started organizing pumping it up and bringing the spare engine, although it started turning to disaster fairly quick.
Because of the humidity the rubber in the dinghy had started to perish, they started a quick repair sealing and tying it up and after waiting a while it seems it would work. So the spare dinghy was launched, engine lowered and a quick test run, and all seemed good. Before we set off for the day Drew started cooking lamb shanks, made up a great sauce and after heating it all up we left it out in the sun to cook away while we were off the boat.
We set off but it was a fairly uncomfortable journey, Drew's hard dinghy is tiny and the slightest swell really throws it about and makes me uneasy. We arrived at the island, tied the boats up and were straight away approached by a local telling us there was a fee due because we were on a National Park. Tommy and I went over to a stall
and asked which island we were on, Khao Ping Kan or better known as James Bond Island ha ha, we couldn't believe our luck, we were planning on looking for this island which is why we anchored where we did.
We walked round the island which was stunning and came round to the famous limestone karst which stands on it's own like a stack off the island. It was originally part of the island but broke away many years ago as shifting plates below created the whole incredible, stunning Phang Nga Bay area. The area was made famous by the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, which Drew and I downloaded and watched a few days later so was an interesting insight to where we were anchored.
We visited other nearby islands before heading back to the boat for our delicious lamb shank dinner. Drew you did a great job, the meat was falling off the bone and I made some mash to along with it... mmm... it's a hard life anchored off in beautiful places and enjoying home cooked food for dinner.
We didn't stay too long before sailing back to the yacht club and once again we managed
the sails up, and tacked our way back once again in perfect conditions. Beautiful conditions, and a great experience.
Thank you Drew and Tommy for your efforts and hard work while sailing, I really enjoyed the trip.
