By a liquid sun that is..!!
Mostly I did some island hopping, half in the rain half in the sun. My first stop was in Pattaya, mecca for sex tourism. Not so much because that is what I am seeking, nor my 'long lost friend' is. But we met up here after 8 years! And from here we left to Koh Chang.
Nice island, specially the second beach had a more relaxed, less-Russian vibe. We had sun, we had rain, I got introduced to the Thai kitchen and we challenged a pretty big black scorpion, all this while staying in huts close to the beach.
From here I went to Bangkok for a few days; met up with my Oz-Frenchie friend at a rooftop bar, met another ozzie friend but Italian on the streets, conveniently he had learned some english in the meantime. The famous Koh San Road took me back to my Spain years behind the bar, so definately not my cuppa, taxi drivers are not my friends, busses are cool. The Chatuchak market is a little too much for me, but I gave it a fair try and had some real nice Pad Thai. The light festival,
or Loy Krathong was coming up as well and I decided to combine this with a visit to the former capital and historical centre Ayutthaya. Here I found the face tree, the one I always assumed that was in Indonesia somehow..😊
Ayutthaya has amazing scenery, shitty elephant rides again with dumb*** tourist sitting on top, loads of picture perfect spots and the love/light festival. I was secretly hoping on the thousands of lanterns being airborne at once, seen on photos..well those photos are not taken in Ayutthaya.. However it was a very nice place to spend this very nice day.
Off to Ton Sai, so excited! Sadly due to rain I got stuck in another overrun-by-Russians place called Ao Nang, one word; very shit! Took a boat in the rain after 2 days, not wanting to waste my time there anymore. Ton Sai is 10 minutes further by boat and is a completely different world; 'the pier' is a semi-sand bank, the 1 street is 3/4 dirt road, the bars mostly reggae and the people mostly very nice and very into climbing! I've read a lot, watched some movies, chitchatted here and there and finally, after a failed
attempt due to some more rain, went for the first time climbing outdoors!! Indoors is definitely different. It was so much fun, our 'crew' as well, smiles all over! Some beach bumming after this physical bit was very pleasant, together with monkeys and penises...
The cave was seen as a symbolic vagina and large wooden carved penises known as lingams were placed here as offerings to the female deity that resided there. It is said that you could carve one of these lingams anywhere on the coast of Krabi, release it on the high tide, and within a few tidal changes it would find its way to the cave.
From here another boat to another island; Koh Lanta. Here I had rain and here I had sun. I did 4 dives with a very nice dive centre(hidden depth) and the only 'green' one on the island. The folks working there were mostly English, fun, and knowledgeable. First 2 dives were nice because of the colours but impressive because of 1 specific detail; the cathedral! You dive into a cave where you can take your masks off and regulator out. Inside the ceiling is high, the wall looks like a organ of a church, there is mist in the top coming and going like the waves on our side, majestic!
The other 2 dives are further out where we spotted a manta and red and purple coral. The not so cool thing was my diving 'buddy', what a excuse for a man he was my goodness. Don't want to give him to much space here
but shortly said; sexist, derogatory, arrogant, ignorant, rude...very etc. I did tell him off back at the dive school, wow, just wow...
From Koh Lanta another boat to another island. To spend some more time with the friend I met in the beginning. Koh Lipe, although development is picking up in high speed there, very relaxed. Here we had some sun, and some rain. And some Bioluminescent phytoplankton..., or just freaking cool fluorescent plankton. Which turned us into little kids splashing around in the night while sticking our heads under the water with masks on! Beautiful food, time to chill, live music, reggae bars, interesting people, huts huts and more huts. And great company all through this, great way to say goodbye.
