This morning was our last morning in Bangkok. Today we were off to Ko Samui for the beach holiday part of our adventure. We had to check out of the hotel by 10.30 which made the timing perfect as we had to be at the airport at 11.30. We had been told it would take about an hour to get to the airport now that Songkran was over but that was way more time than we needed. Made it there with plenty of time to spare. At check in the attendant checked my guitar but advised I take it to the plane as "this is Thailand and sometimes bags get...thrown." That was no drama to me but I did notice the looks I got walking through the airport with my guitar. People thinking I'm a muso makes me feel extraordinarily cool. No need to inform them that I'm struggling to strum the five chords I've learned to date. Right now, I'm cool.
The flight to Ko Samui was only an hour. We were given an inflight meal which hardly seemed necessary. We had barely finished it when it was time to touch down. It was one of the roughest and
scariest touch downs I have experienced to date. On descent the plane seemed to lift and drop quite a bit. Then when we touched down it took a moment to long (in my opinion) for the pilot to hit the brakes. Then there was a small bout of swerving on the runway. When we finally came to a stop everyone applauded.
Ko Samui airport is only small, a lot like Hamilton island. We disembarked from the plane on the runway, then were ferried to the terminal in glorified golf carts...or maybe golf busses would be a better description. Either way baggage collection was easy and then all we had to do was find our driver. We found him with no issue and then we were off to our resort. On arrival they informed us they had overbooked so we were upgraded to a poolside villa. Oh the inhumanity! The room is amazing. We have our own private pool that overlooks the main pool, which is massive. There is a huge bath that cleopatra would have been happy with. The only downside is we asked for two beds, but the room has one queen size and a couch/daybed. The daybed is
huge so we don't have to sleep together, but I am getting the sneaky suspicion they think we are a couple.
After settling in we took a dip in our private infinity pool. Looking over the edge I figured I could climb over and jump into the main pool. I took a swim out and about and noticed a swim up bar at the end of the pool. I notified Jo immediately ("Hey Jo theres a bar over there"😉 Jo sensibly decided to walk around to the bar, I swam over. Later on I would swim back only to find I cannot pull myself up out of the water back into our private pool. Its quite deep near our villa.
We were very pleased to discover that happy hour goes from 1pm to 6pm. 150 baht for cocktails. Yippee. After happy hour finished we meandered to the resort pub. As we are on a special deal we have a set menu. We had chicken curry soup, ginger beef and stir fried vegetable. We will go neither hungry or thirsty here. It was a huge meal and quite odd because they brought the soup and the main at the same time. Desert did come later which was a platter of tropical fruit. Unfortunately it went almost untouched because we were both very full. This might just work out.
