So I'm back in Bangkok for another extended rest period from travelling, and it's taken some six weeks before I found the strength again for a short sojourn outside of the capital. It was the Mother's Day long weekend here in Thailand, so I took the opportunity to visit the famous floating markets in Amphawa and Damnoen Saduak just outside of Bangkok. I'd read about these in LP during my first extended stay in Bangkok around this time last year, and they seemed like convenient day trips, but it has taken me until now to get down to visiting them. It's funny how sometimes the closer they are, the harder they are to visit... I vaguely remember visiting a floating market as a kid, and I vaguely remember it being a looong boat ride down the ... read more

Geo: 13.82, 100.06It was a busy road out of Bangkok which didn't let up all day, I feel like I don't properly breathe in the chaos and actually have a long drawn out sigh of relief when I hit a quiet spot which is how I know I'm under pressure. It was like a motorway leaving the city and I find it extremely hard going when I have to use the off ramps when joining new roads, it's like cycling on a spaghetti junction. At least the first 30km out of Bangkok was just chaos before I managed to get off and onto a single track country road full of banana plantations, palm trees and rice paddies which was a welcome relief from the traffic. At one point after losing my bearings I visited a massive ... read more

My Thai friend (Mr Chat) arranged a van from a tour agency to take me around in the western part of Thailand. I went to the Rose Garden in the morning, had my lunch at one of the local coffee shop before heading for the Wat Chedi. My Thai driver is very kind and friendly, on the highway he showed me an arch indicated in Thai which I do not know how to read, asking me if I would like to visit this place. "Temple, Temple" he pointed excitedly, but what temple could that be, a narrow road that leads to only he knows what was in store in the village. Then he said, "Hanuman Temple". "Wa Lau Wey!"(Hokkien version for WOW!)....I have never seen a Hanuman Temple before, despite my second trip to Bangkok, it ... read more

We had a really early pick-up from our hotel to head off to Kanchanaburi, which is where all our activities start :) We had our first experience of a hole in the floor for a toilet on the way! We stopped off at a service station and it wasn't pretty! The first stop for our activities was a Second World War Memorial where there were headstones for people from England, Australia, New Zealand, America & Holland. So sad reading the messages on the headstones. We then headed to a War Museum where we walked the bridge over the River Kwai. So scary! Really big rickety bridge and the only space to walk was about a ft in width plank. When there's loads of people going in both directions, it's quite scary trying to dodge eachother! A ... read more

Llevamos ya cuatro dias y mannana acabamos ... read more

I'm going to have to start with an apology for the lack of contact lately - January was a month plagued with illnesses - Coughs and colds continually picked up from the kids as well as a particularly nasty bout of food poisoning. We think this was caught from the pool and we were both ill (in one small room!). I didn't eat for 4 days!!!! and then couldn't eat properly for a couple of weeks and we both had to be taken to the hospital. Apparently there is a well placed mistrust of GPs in Thailand which means hospital is the first port of call. Imagine this - there was no queue! We were treated very well and had to pay the doctor 50p for his time! A bargain! Anyway I promise to try to ... read more

Happy New Year Everybody! We are now sadly back at work following our Christmas break. Most teachers in Thailand don't get Christmas off so we were very lucky to have 10 days to escape. The last few weeks passed in a blur of cotton wool, glitter and 'jingle bells' as the children did special Christmas activities. One of the schools we work at is a Christian school so we went to their Christmas concert which was far from traditional! The children wore so much make up - like you would see at a beauty pageant - even the boys! Their clothes and hair were incredible but apparently they start getting ready for events like this from about 2am! The teachers have to be at school from then to help out and some of the students just ... read more

Well, we have managed to drag ourselves to the end of a very tiring two weeks at work! The last few weeks traveling were a bit tough. I had my first real feeling of homesickness and I think we both just wanted to unpack! After viewing a few housing options we decided that we would rather live near the town than the school, in an apartment block which includes 5 other 'farang' (foreign) teachers. The best thing by far is the huge swimming pool at the end of our corridor! It is beautiful and nearly always deserted as most Thai's won't go out in the sun and can't swim! We have gone swimming nearly everyday and it is so relaxing to be floating in the pool by 3 after a day's work! The room itself is ... read more
