After almost four hours on the train we finally arrived in Kanchanaburi, the home of the Bridge Over The River Kwai, which became infamous as part of the ‘Death Railway’ given its name by allied prisoners of war, who the Japanese had made to build during world war two as they pushed on their conquest of SE Asia. So many POWs died building this railway, which started in Thailand and crossed over into Burma to the Indian border, that the prisoners themselves (mainly British and Australian) gave the name The Death Railway. There’s still a section of the railway which you can ride the train on, right up to Nam Tok from Bangkok, and this is how we had decided to get to Kanchanaburi. You can get a minibus which gets you there in half the ... read more

We stayed in Kanchanaburi for a few nights in a river raft room. It was so basic; our room was completely made from bamboo, the walls were incredibly thin and everytime a boat came past it rocked from side to side! There was no flushing toilet and the shower was filled with gheckos! But...it was so beautiful. It was really peaceful and the staff were so sweet, (despite speaking no english at all!) We had a little seating area on our raft, to sit outside and look at the passing boats, monitor lizards or the sunset over the River Kwai Bridge. We visited a WW2 cemetary, which was immaculate. There were three gardeners working away whilst we were there. It was so quiet considering it was in the city. The head stones were all identical, lined ... read more

I woke up at 6:15am. I really hate getting up early and I count it as one of the best parts of my traveling days that I don't have to get out of bed until I want to. Though in the effort of living life to the fullest I try to average a 9am wake up call. So 6:15 am is quite early for me. At 6:30 a hostel employee knocked on the door and told me that they are waiting for me downstairs. I was almost ready anyway, so I grabbed my bag and hat and rushed down the stairs only to be told that I had to wait until 7am. They only sent someone to make sure I was ready. Since they are probably used to dealing with drunken backpackers I don't hold the ... read more

Arived in Kanchanaburi yesterday. This is the third time i have visted and i still love it, it feels like a trip to a beach as a kid, similar but still exciting. Today I settled in to the Jolly Frog backpacker Hostel. This place is awesome and has great prices and an amzing view of the river. The riverside is just one street with everything you need on it, from laid back cafes to book stores. Compared to bangkok it is much more relaxed while still offering everything that a traveler might need. There is almost nothing better than sitting down by the River Kwai reading a book and chatting with other travelers. The scenery is gorgeous and as the sun sets the orange hue it cats over the water is almost magical. Kanchanaburi for me ... read more

On Wednesday, Griff and I did a tour that took us to Kanchanaburi Province, about 120km from Bangkok. The tour was to include some war history, traveling on the Death Railway, an elephant ride, and going to a tiger sanctuary. We were told that we’d be picked up by the tour company at 6:30am. Sooooo early. What made it worse was that they were early picking us up. I gulped a banana (grown locally – so good!) and hopped into the van. We drove through Bangkok for maybe half an hour, and then the driver told us we had to switch vans. We were right across from a hotel with these two girls waiting outside, but we didn’t pick them up. At the time, I was thinking that maybe they were doing another tour, but no, ... read more

When we left Phuket, we really didn’t know what to expect. We had heard a town called Kanchanaburi was fun, inexpensive and most importantly, not under-water. We left as a group of eight, lost two, and as of today (Saturday) our group has swelled to thirteen of the original thirty-two ATI students. It is really tragic to see the devastation that has hit our new home-away-from-home, as more than one-third of Thailand’s provinces are now under water. Even major portions of the capital city Bangkok, with a population estimated to be somewhere between twelve and sixteen million people, are in the process of evacuation. The flooding is hitting our ATI group hard as well. At the very least five of the ATI students have found the situation too overwhelming, or too inconvenient, and are on their ... read more

The tiger temple in Thailand- ran by Buddhist monks to help save tigers from being poached and killed.....to look after and care for a species that is slowly becoming extinct. you can have your photo taken with the most powerful animal ever to walk the earth- sit next to a tiger - maybe with it's head on your lap- stroke them they're fine.......I'm totally 50/50 on this- surely the tigers are drugged, they're natural instinct is to kill not to pose for photos - something not quite right yet when else can I EVER get this close to tigers?! so, after much reading and debating we go.......and I'm so glad I did because I can make my own mind up that this is most definitely NOT right!!! don't get me wrong it was an amazing experience ... read more
