Koh Samui
We arrived late afternoon after an epic journey. We entertained ourselves by watching downton abbey which we had downloaded on the iPad (a godsend on long journeys I tell you). Why the hell hadn't anyone told us how brilliant this series was?! We loved it and started imagining what we would be like if either of us owned a country pile...
We did our usual thing of turning up and not having any idea of where to stay (adds to the adventure of it all) so we got a cab to take us to chewang noi, north of the party beach and a little quieter. We asked around and it was relatively expensive for Thailand so trace decided to leave Tash at a bar and go hunt herself rather than have us both lugging big rucksacks around. Trace arrived and said lets go but was being cagey about the hotel - Tash was thinking, what on earth as she booked! We passed a beautiful looking, clearly luxury hotel and Tash piped up and said, oooo that looks nice and Tracy replied, good, cause that's were we are staying!!!! Tash was glued - er, what? Trace then went onto
explain that her house has just been sold and she wanted to celebrate in style and stay in style for the next few days - so we did!!! It was stunning and we had an amazing stay, doing nothing but sunbathing, eating and drinking and chatting to some mad Americans we met! The beach BBQ was amazing - gorgeous food, seafood, salads... Omg, lovely!!! Fab times and thanks trace!!! They had double beds in the shade were you could go for a nap, a gorgeous pool and oh I could go on...
After a day sunbathing again and both with burnt bums, We went to the Ice Bar, which is nothing short of a big freezer with ice sculptures in it who serve expensive drinks. It was pretty cool though (please don't excuse the pun) and we looked ridiculous in wooly hats, ponchos, gloves and flip flops! We trundled around some markets after that and absorbed the atmosphere of the island. What a place.
The next day, after a tough day sunbathing again, we headed into town and stopped at a massive sports bar. We were approached by one of the Thai waitresses who challenged us to connect
four game.. If she won, we buy her a drink, if we won, she buys us a drink... Challenge was on! Except that, despite her appearance, she was a demon at connect four and beat us four out of four times before Tash said no more!!!! Can't take losing anymore! Connect four though?! The shame... Crafty buggers... Then trace wanted to play pool and the rule of the house is that winner stays on and plays next person on the chalk board. She won her first match against some guy, then she beat me who was next on the board.. AFter that, no more names were up so a Thai waitress said that she would play trace... We were worried, as the bet was a drink again and we knew these Thai women were crafty at these games! Fear not though, as Tracy whipped her ass and she had to buy trace a drink much to her displeasure! Then they all paid attention - this English girl in a dress is pretty damn good! So they all lined up to take her on but trace wiped the floor with them all! Ha ha! Trace then got bored of winning so
let one of them win ( so she says) and we headed off to a Cabaret called moulin rouge which was recommended to us by a guy we met.
A cabaret in Thailand is nothing without a few lady boys, well, I say a few, ALL of them were and made even beyonce look positively masculine! It was hilarious and they mimed and danced their way though various big songs dressed in all sorts of glammed up, camped up gear! Where some of them put their bits we will never know - that's if they had any bits! Some certainly had boobs - hopefully not the 'pip' versions, and it was sometimes hard to tell if they were girls or guys although the six foot version of Tina turner and the massive feet of Celine dion gave us a bit of a clue. Brilliant fun, made even more so by an uptight Chinese wife who sat with a scowl and her arms crossed throughout who gave looks of absolute displeasure when her husband was dancing and clapping during the show! Brilliant!
A great way to end an absolutely brilliant time on Koh Samui... Love this place and one
we shall remember for a long time! Next stop Koh phangnan island!
