Happy Holidays from Baan Tharn Namchai!
I am working at an orphanage in the south of Thailand that supports children and families devastated by the Tsunami of 2004. Although we are coming upon the third anniversary of the disaster, we need your help. The emergency funds and humanitarian aid that flooded our area in the first year after the disaster is finished, but our children are still here and still need a means to attend school and have a home.
For the past two years, our staff and members of the community have worked hard to establish and maintain the children’s home here at the centre in Phru Teow village. Many improvements have been made this year including additions to the washing and kitchen area, mattresses for the 20 new children that have come to call this place home and medical support in the form of first aid training
There are now 49 children who live here permanently. There are 28 girls and 21 boys ranging in ages from five months to twenty years old. Thanks to the support of our current sponsors, these children are able to attend school and have transportation to and from school.
Sponsors can provide uniforms, books and supplies, funds to participate in activities such as Thai boxing, art projects, traditional dance, out trips and learning activities. With funding through donations, the children are able to receive some medical and psychological care which is necessary after the trauma they have suffered. The center occasionally is able to organize visiting professionals including psychologists, health care workers, social workers and others who have donated their time.
Baan Tharn Namchai has the goal of fostering children towards a healthy and productive life and future. While assistance with their basic needs is necessary, the staff hope to help the children move past the tragedy of the recent past and enjoy the future.
Help is still needed. Some of the options to help our centre and assist the children include:
ONE TIME DONATIONS
A one time donation of $50 CDN can go far here. By donating $50, you can support one of the projects that the Tahng Ya Phraek Foundation facilitates. These projects include Medical insurance for one year for the children at the orphanage (one $50 dollar donation provides insurance for four children for one year); donations towards the transportation costs of two of the Baan Tharn Namchai members to travel to Canada. The overall cost of this project is approximately $3000.00. This is by far the largest and most important project for the long term goals of the Orphanage with regards to the children’s futures. The English training they will receive will be of enormous benefit as they grow and seek employment. One bonus of donating to this project is that you will be able to meet your sponsored child! During the visit in April/May, we will be hosting a dinner for all the sponsors and during the evening, a traditional Thai dance performance will be performed by the child from Baan Tharn Namchai. I can’t express how important this project is…she is already practicing her dancing!; A $50.00 donation to the Joo English School Project will purchase materials for Joo to continue her teaching. Joo’s school was recently developed and is instructing village women in basic English conversation. This project greatly increases the women’s prospects at gaining employment in the growing tourism industry here.
CHILD SPONSORSHIP
• 3000 baht per month to sponsor a child who lives at the centre. At the time of this letter, only 18 children have full sponsors. This amount includes the purchase and upkeep of school uniforms, books and supplies, personal hygiene items, bedding and clothing, transportation to and from school, three meals a day and additional fruits and supplements for nutrition.
• 1000 baht per month to assist a community child with educational costs, school transportation and food supplements.
• 400 baht per year to purchase medical insurance for one year for a child. This insurance provides a guarantee of assistance and medical care in the case of any accident or event that the child becomes injured or harmed. Otherwise, a costly visit and medication may not be available.
• Any amount financial donation. These funds go towards providing activities and events for all the children and include lessons, art supplies, trips and fun events.
We thank you all for your thoughts and assistance.
