Geo: 6.62, 100.07Loi Krathong is a festival in Thailand which is celebrated by floating decorated baskets down the river for good luck. It is celebrated on the full moon in the 12th month so dates change each year.In Satun in Thailand we visited the nearby river which was ablaze with celebrations, there were decorations all around the river, floats made up and everyone was celebrating and enjoying the event. Many were in traditional dress and outfits and taking part in the good luck of floating a basket of flowers lit by candles down the river. It is good luck to add a strand of hair, fingernail and money into the basket before sending it off into the night, sending it off with your thoughts. It was lovely seeing locals in traditional dress and taking part in the ... read more

Geo: 6.62, 100.07De-masting a 106ft mast... Now this was scary... because of the height of the mast and obviously the extra height being out on the hard stand, we needed not only one but two cranes which we had to get from Hat Yai which is around 100km away. On the way the guys had a bit of a break down so they didn't arrive in the yard until around 2pm but at this point we started anyway despite the remaining daylight. Being so close to the equator the sun goes down around 6:30pm which I do find hard, I always loved the long late sunsets at home in Scotland combined with the short days of winter but now it's similar hours all the time, up 6:30, down 6:30.The whole yard was watching, helping, anticipating... the ... read more

Koh Lipe, a beautiful small island in the Andaman Sea, Satun province of southwest of Thailand, close to the Malaysian border. It's my first time writing a TravelBlog. I'm excited to write a story about my new experiences on this exotic island. I arrived at the Thai border in Sadao, went through immigration where they wouldn't let me (a little Thai girl) get back to my home country. That was kind of funny as I'm 100% Thai and I just wanted to come back home after my fun, adventurous trip in Malaysia. I started at Hatyai town where we could catch a van to Pakbara Pier (about 1.30 hr), then a speedboat to the island (about1.45 hr). The speedboat driver stopped at the entrance of Tarutao National Park for 10 mins so that tourists could take ... read more

Geo: 6.62, 100.07It's strange being back in Satun although I quickly settle into a routine of cycling every morning and pottering around the boat during the day helping out. In the morning I bump into the local farmer taking his cows to the field, eat local food in Che Be Lang and watch the comings and going in the shipyard which I find fascinating.I love the Thai fishing boats, the colors and fishermen but the smell can be overwhelming... it's fairly disgusting coming up the river and into the shipyard but fascinating at the same time. Here's some pictures of day to day stuff at PSS Shipyard to give you an idea of what it's like. Strangely enough many of the workers all bring their birds to work with them, I mean seriously, they bring them ... read more

Geo: 6.62, 100.07I caught the ferry from Kuah to Satun where Jamie and Julie came to pick me up, it's lovely going back to the shipyard to see them and Thea and see how she's looking. They very kindly let me stay on board in one of their cabins, the boat really is a home from home, full of character and really stunning. Jamie and Julie are extremely generous and kind to me, looking after me, making meals, sharing drinks and strangely enough it feels like visiting family. The work on the boat is going well but I know they are keen to get her launched again and get out of the shipyard. I love the buzz of the shipyard, watching the boats being hauled out, worked on and put in again, it's a real hive of activity ... read more

So heading downstairs to book our transport to take us to Ko Lipe we were told that this was no longer an option! And that the only choice was to catch a public minibus to the port, being 2hrs away. Thinking that we were closer to the port being in Satun we were actually as near to it as when we were in Trang - so could of saved ourselves the extra journey to Satun in the end! We caught a bus to the pier and brought tickets for the boat to the island - finally we were on our way! A pleasant journey past Ko Tarutao and we had made it to Ko Lipe. The only way to gain access to the island is to dock at a pontoon then take it in turns to ... read more

Geo: 6.62, 100.07I traveled over to Satun in Thailand, to see friends Jamie and Julie on their super yacht Thea which was in the boatyard for final touches. Jamie kindly came to collect me from the ferry station and took me out to the boat where I would stay with them for roughly one week.Jamie and Julie are a really lovely couple, fun, kind and friendly and really kind to each other, it's lovely to see. They are staying on the boat while working on it and they have a team of workers who come every morning, on time, and work hard all day which is why many boats come into Thailand for work/repairs etc. I've never been in a boatyard before and it's brilliant, what a fascinating place to see and watch the process of ... read more

I took a minivan to Satun this morning, which is a small town bordering Malaysia. Usually only on a backpackers route to catch the same day ferry across to Langkawi. Given I don't need to rush I decided to stay for the night in Satun and soak up the local charm. I'm staying at a cute, eclectic guesthouse called AngYees. It's right in the centre of town and I have a double bedroom with fan and window overlooking the garden. Gyeee has put a lot of effort intoMaking the place very individual and it feels like an artists home. You walk into the reception/bar area and then out to the oasis of a garden. For 400baht it's a little Pricey but certainly homely. The minute I walked in I met with Gyee, and a guy called ... read more

It was time to hit the beach - and we were ready for some island hopping. It was quite hard to decide on which island to start. We decided to start on Koh Bulon. Why? We wanted to go to an island that is not crowded with tourists, be it overnight or on day trips and Koh Bulon seemed to be the right choice. We also hoped for some decent snorkelling right off the beach. Off we went by minibus from Trang to Pakbara. From here it is easy to get a speed boat to Koh Bulon at midday. It was a pleasant speedboat ride for 1 hour till we had to change to a small local boat. Koh Bulon does not have a pier and the small local boats brought us right on the beach. ... read more
