Hi all,
Both me and Steve were sad to leave Ao nang, but it wasn't the same without the gang (Kajsa, Micke, Gunnel and Robert), we missed you guys terribly the last night.
Just like to mention a funny thing that happened on the last night, my birthday. Me and Steve went to the local restaurang, the super nice waitress new us pretty well by then and new that it was my birthday. Everytime we had been to the restaurant during the two weeks we had been there we had ordered deep fried shrimps (the gang had too), so for my birthday she gave us deep fried shrimps and deep fried spring rolls, which was really nice, but me and steve was soooo full. We didn't want to seem rude and not eat the food, so tried to think of ways we could hide the food or pretend we had eaten it. Where were the dogs when you needed them? In the end we manage to squeeze some in my handbag, ha ha, when no one was looking. I know it is awful, but we were just sooo full.
The journey from Ao Nang to Phuket (Karon Beach) took much longer than expected. We were suppose to have been picked up by a minibus at 10.00 in the morning, they arrived at 11.30, then we had to wait in Krabi until 14.00. Apperently there was a problem with the bus? Then we were sent to the bus station where we had to wait for another hour. The minibus finally arrived at the station at 15.00 and took us to Karon, only 5 hours late.
We had pre-booked at room at a hostel called pineapple, it turned out to be ok. On the evening we arrived to pineapple, some Norweigian people next door had organised an afterski party, they had bought a truck load of ice which was dumped on the street outside our hostel and used that as a ski slope. Kids were skiing on it using crocs nailed to planks of wood, it was pretty strange, but funny.
We found that Karon was too comercial for our liking, the place was like Sweden, but much hotter. All restaurant served
Swedish food, all shop sign was in Swedish, you could buy salt liquorich (which I liked) and snuff in the shops and you could even go to Harrys (a chain of clubs in Sweden). Karon is also known for it's lady bars. Karon's neighbour, Kata, was much nicer, the beach was beautiful and much more laidback, but only Scandinavians again =).
Next to our hostel was a really nice little restaurant which served thai food for next to nothing. Many people from the hostel ate most of there meals there, so it was a good place to get to know people. One night we ended up going out with a canadian couple (but in a very open relationship), a danish girl, an english 18-year old and the owner of Pineapple, it was a really weird night. We went to the lady bars (just to check it out), it was quite fun, me and the Danish girl was even asked to have a go at the pole, but we denied, thought it should be left to the professionals.
The last night in Karon, we took, Joel, the English guy out for a Swedish music quiz at Harrys, we came
fourth, out of five teams (not bad considering I had two handicaps).
We left for Kao Lak the following morning, a three hour bus journey along the west coast (north). Kao Lak was a up and coming backpacker and holiday destination before the tsunami hit the town really bad in 2004. Accoding to a Tsunami museum we visited, 100 out of 123 hotels in Kao Lak got destroyd and since then the re-development has been slow. Kao lak was nice but it felt empty, no athmospere really, it needs more tourism. But we still enjoyed our time there and we tasted the nicest Pad Thai yet!
From Kao Lak we took the night train to Bangkok.
