Day 6
Bye bye Samui....Krabi here I come
I woke to a pleasant morning, sun rays peeping from the curtains, sweet sea breezing is blowing, and step outside my room to find clear blue sky and sun shining high. I packed my bags and bid adieu to David and Penzie. I found others rooms locked so I could not meet them before leaving. I loved the brief stay here and went on a stroll by Chaweng beach one final time before arriving at Samui Airport. Samui Airport was delightful attraction in itself. It rightly claims itself to be a boutique airport and there is no indoor area, except the gift shop and the buildings are in form of sacks and cottages and shades with lot of colorful decorations and tropical plants. Even the toilets had big aquariums installed with colorful exotic fishes. When we boarded the flight the small aircraft too had been painted with vivid colors and there are zebra fishes in a very bright way. I felt like I was in some Disneyland instead of airport. The flight to Krabi was packed completely and consisted mainly rather all white tourists and I was the only colored skin.
The journey was short and soon we landed in Krabi airport.
Arriving Krabi
I was unable to decide where to go as to I did not have any clue what Krabi has in store for me. I once thought it would be wise for me to go to Krabi bus station and take a bus to Phuket and skip Krabi all together. I collected my luggage and then took some guidance from of the Tourist Guidance counter at the counter inside the airport complex. I did not get much chance to study Krabi really. So I got the information that there are lots of islands to see from Krabi starting from Ao Nang. Most the long tail boats leave from there along with a few speed boats. Railay beach is another beautiful stretch of beach but I have to the ferry to reach Railay from Ao Nang though I personally felt there got to be another way to Railay. Anyways, instinctively I took the airport bus to from the airport and booked it for Ao Nang. I need to get accommodation first. The airport bus to my surprise turned out to be a “backpacker bus”. The people in
Krabi looked a lot darker in complexion and predominantly muslim. But I hoped they be helpful. I took the front seat in the bus behind the driver and there in front of me lay bags which resembled a “backpack mountain”. The bus was full and everyone carried a 60 ltr plus sacks! wow!. I got a seat next to an Canadian lady again traveling solo. She had been traveling all over Asia starting from Shanghai, China and then Singapore and then Malaysia for a couple of days and then mostly Thailand and then will be meeting up her travel buddy at Malaysia again. It was really amazing to find that so many solo backpackers. I thought I was the only one and the number of people in for the trip made me realize “You will never walk alone”.
(Samui - Krabi) Same Same but different
I got down near Ao Nang Beach resort and walked from door to door with heavy load up and down the corner of the beach road looking for a cheap accommodation. Most of the accommodations were on expensive side. I went into J Mansion but found out that all accommodation there was
full. So I went to the sister hotel J hotel on the other side. The room was small and no air conditioner but at 550 baht and close to beach but lacked facilities. Since I was there to spend the whole day in room I took the room. The weather here was different from Krabi which was so close from here. It was humid and sunny and though there are little clouds but not that dark and cloudy and no strong wind. It was bit more humid in here though resembled weather in Calcutta. I am happy to see sun after so long for such a long time. I got in to the beach of Ao Nang watching the sunset at the distant corner. The place looked amazing. The mystical mountains far off the horizon and the color of the sea is mix of green, blue, pink and more of grey. Long tail boats anchored at the corner of the beach. The beach was not completely clean and more shelly. 10 or 15 of tourists jogging entire stretch of the beach. Though the beach is less busy than the Chaweng beach and I was happy to relax and gaze at
horizon in tranquility. I walked by the beach like baby steps and also down the beach road to the other corner and was happy to find that this place is less touristy and the street hawkers are less disturbing than what I encountered in Samui. I went to the other side of the beach road and I walked to down so far that I almost lost my way back to my hotel. I wanted to try out some local seafood but again it was so expensive here that I ended up gazing by the restaurant windows or reading the menus and tagged prices outside the restaurant. It is nice to get a laid back life and away from the busy nightclubs, raves and bars for a while post experience in party islands of Samui and Phangan. I went to try out the local food in the night. I found out street food is active here where the for a change locals prefer eating. I followed some trail to a moving stall which sells Thai soup noodles. It was delicious and I get the chance to use chopsticks first time in Thailand. It was savior as it was already 12 in
the night and I feared to sleep hungry. Instead it was a lovely surprise to find yummy food out of nowhere. On way back I tried the crispy banana pancakes from the road side stall sold by a veiled Muslim lady. It was so tasty and yummy that I ended up buying another one of those crispy chewy snacks. When I was nearing my hotel I ended up trying different variations of Thai satays ( Thai variation of kebabs) of different types of meat from one of those red-pink lightened street stalls.
