Merry Christmas!!! We just returned from the Similan Islands and plan to pick up my Dad at the airport today and finally be united to have a nice Christmas on the Ko Yao islands. But going back a few days… From the appropriately named Family Bungalow in Khao Lak, we awoke at sun rise to make our way to the marina, where we prepared to board our live-aboard boat for 3 days. The destination: Similan Islands. These 9 islands are a National Park in Thailand and boast some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world. They lived up to their expectations! Our boat slept about 18 people, the other patrons were two Swedish families who were very friendly. We made the four hour trip west into the Andaman Sea to the cluster of ... read more

Well methinks that this blog entry was a little later than I intended but what does one do when you have so much stress to deal with? First off I want to wish everyone back in Vancouver and elsewhere in the world a very Merry Christmas. I drove a beat-up motor scooter across the sandy paths of a tropical island to try and make a last minute Christmas phone call and in the end decided I ought to do a blog as well. So, as I write this I’m sitting in front of a rather old but solid computer in the back of what I can only decipher as a sweat shop/ clothing warehouse on a remote tropical island off the west coast of Thailand. You know it’s bad when you’ve been to so many islands ... read more

Well can words describe this place we have been to and what we saw? I will do my best! The Similan Islands are off the South West Coast of Thailand. 'Similan' means 9 in Malay. Not 100% too sure in Thai what it means but I think it could be 8, because this is the largest island of the 9 and is actually named 'Similan' so it might be the case. Anyway, we booked on a snorkelling and free diving boat for 3 days (Poseidon Adventures), sleeping on the boat for 2 nights. In total there were about 18 of us, comprising of Swedes, Germans, Americans, English and 2 Czechs. There were 4 crew members aboard and 2 from the company 'Poseidon '. The company is a swedish company but everyone talked in English so it ... read more

After a long and very cold (air con) overnight bus trip from Bangkok to Khao Lak, I arranged to go on a Liveabord dive trip into the Similan Islands. The boat left in the evening of the morning I arrived so I was exhausted when we started out but soon reovered. I have never done a Liveaboard before, it was a brilliant way to dive and see the Similan's. I went with Siam Dive Adventure, their boat is very new and comfortable, the package included 14 dives over 4 days and 4 nights around the Similan Islands. I won't bore you with the ins and outs but everything was good, a great bunch of people on the boat, excellent food, great weather and fantastic diving. My highlight definitly has to be swimming with a 4 metre ... read more

Arrived back from the liveaboard yesterday. I did 11 (well, ten and a half really) of a possible 14 dives in four days, which i was pretty happy with... if i had done the whole 14 i don't think i would have enjoyed them as much because i would have been absolutely buggered. and i developed a cold so i would have been in a great deal of pain for a couple of them too. It was a really good trip though... the boat was quite nice - 30 metres with air-conditioned cabins and shared bathrooms, and heaps of staff... the paying customers did nothing but eat, sleep and dive... and even the diving was lazy - the "thai crew" put all the gear together, filled the tanks, helped you into your gear, into the water, ... read more

Well it was magic! Manta rays, turtles, huge moray eels, clown fish (nemo fishies, that is), an amazing array of tropical fish, schooling barracuda, the odd large pelagic such as tuna or giant trevally, giant gorgonian fans, an assortment of hard and soft corals, clear, warm, warm water (most of the time) and a great boat. What more could you ask for? Well, whale sharks perhaps but lets not dwell on the negatives... Oh, and I didn't get a photo of the manta ray so you'll just have to take my word for it! GETTING THERE Getting there was ok. I had remembered the night train with reclining seats to be a very painful mode of travel but it was nowhere as bad as I remembered. It is amazing how your perceptions change as you travel ... read more

Okay, all right. I know, we are actually back in the mall in Bangkok (because it has the best internet at the best cost and with the best chairs). BUT, after having been to the Similian Islands, (expected total isolation but actually seconds after setting foot on the pristine beach a Japanese lady came out of nowhere to take a picture of us), I took the liberty of placing this blog square on these magnificent isles in the middle of the Andaman Sea. So here we are or were until a few days ago, but it doesn't really matter to you either way. After a few weeks in Vietnam we had a 10 day period without any plans (similar to the entire 4 months we've had so far but that's another tale for another time) ... read more

In a nutshell... Dreamy islands, crystal clear warm waters, powdery white sandy beaches, brilliant blue skies and cotton candy clouds...simply paradise... Getting there... Flew to Phuket via Tiger Air and stayed over a night in Patong Baan Tonsai Garden - a budget motel with lots of European tourists and also local Thais on holiday. The taxi ride from the airport was quite pricey - i paid 500 baht just to get to my dive shop Ocean Zone Divers in Chalong Bay for my EANx course. The next day, after a good day trip with Marina Divers, our friendly driver brought me and Yuko from Chalong all the way up north to Tap Lamu in Khao Lak. There, we boarded our LOB boat and met the other divers for our diving holiday. The drive was almost 2 ... read more
