We were up early and had just a few minutes to take a look at the beach. It had worn the brunt of the storm the previous night and wasn’t in great shape with debris all over the sand. We were briefly joined by a cat that wasted no time in making itself at home in the bungalow. We were booked through to Bangkok with Air Asia and the TBH1200 each (NZD48) covered a ferry to the mainland, an hour bus trip to the airport and the 45 minute flight to Bangkok. The day went slowly and it was no surprise that we were both thinking about Koh Tao. It was another hour on board a free bus from Don Muang Airport to Suvarnabhumi Airport where our flight was due to leave around 2000. We were ... read more

Ko Pha Ngan We hopped on the ferry at Koh Tao, just a reminder that Hannah was feeling sicky bad by this stage (the words 'I can't do this anymore' and 'I think this is the end' were uttered). Han was hoping a sleep on the ferry would help cure her, however once on the boat we had to endure the roughest 2 hour crossing!! We also got split up and I got stuck beside the bin (this would have been fine had about a quarter of the boat not been suffering from seasickness and putting their used sick bags in the bin!). So in true Lauren form I napped and poor Hannah had to try and keep herself in one piece. We stumbled off the ferry in Ko Pha Ngan, Hannah trying not to pass ... read more

Exchange Rate $1AUD = 29.6Baht As the spicy Samui sun begins to retreat and no longer stings our skin, there is not a ripple in the ocean and the sky turns into a beautiful oil painting with soft pink, red and orange hues. A sense of calm and relaxation washes over us both as we lay back on the powdery white sand to enjoy what has to be our favourite time of the day. As the day slowly escapes us and evening falls, the twinkling lights peek out from the palm trees and fences along the beach and Koh Paengyan lights up on the horizon. Whether it be losing ourselves in our books, taking a dip in the lukewarm unspoilt ocean or watching the world go by, sunset on the beaches in Koh Samui has to ... read more

Abandoned on a crowded pavement, the scorching early afternoon sun blazing down on us, we’d just about avoided the notorious “travel agent” scam by the skin of our teeth. Research about the long journey from Khao Lak to Koh Samui had warned us about it but everything just happened so incredibly quickly. Luck was with us though the moment of realisation occurred just before we parted with any hard earned cash – a close shave! Our day had started at 6.30am as we needed to traverse from the extreme west of Thailand right across the country to an island off the East coast. Things had gone reasonably well; our taxi to the main road was waiting for us outside the hotel, the infamous 465 public bus did actually stop when we flagged it down and even ... read more

We've been very lucky this week to be able to stay in a lovely beach resort on the north east coast of Koh Samui, the south west of Thailand. We're staying at the Imperial Boathouse, courtesy of Mjs mum and dad - Penny and Chris, who came out to meet us on the 1st April. They'd spent three days in Bangkok before getting a flight down to meet us in Koh Samui for a week. They came with treats for us from home - salt and vinegar crisps, proper Cadburys chocolate and marmite!!!! I was so happy! We've had lots of relaxation time at Cheong Mon beach and the resort's two pools, one of which is fashioned as a large Thai long tail boat! It was lovely to stay in a hotel and actually get unpacked ... read more

After briefly touring northwestern Thailand, I opted out of 24 hours of bus/train/ferry travel and instead burned some Chase points on a surprisingly expensive direct Bangkok Air flight from Chiang Mai to Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand on the East side of Thailand's skinny southern leg. “Koh” (sometimes Ko) means “island” in Thai, and Samui was one of the earlier expat vacation spots in Thailand, with things getting rolling there in the 1970s, and it now having surpassed Phuket as having Thailand's most resorts, outside of Bangkok. Phangan is a quick ferry ride to the north of Samui, but is less developed, with things only getting started there in the 1980s. It's now well-known for the full-moon parties (and now also half- and new-moon parties) that attract 10s of thousands. Koh Tao, with its ... read more

So yesterday (12th February) I was supposed to be collected from my hotel to go to Kep, an island off the south east coast of Cambodia. I had booked the tickets and my hotel for that night there earlier in the day. Later that night at midnight, I thought why am I going to Kep? I looked at the transport links and there weren't really any that I could use in good time at a cheap price so I decided that I would book a flight for the 13th out of Phnom Penh and into Bangkok and not go to Kep, in order to connect with an overnight train to Champon where I would catch a connecting bus to the port of Lomprayah where I would get onto a catamaran to get to Koh Samui. A final welcome chance to chill out after 13 weeks of full on globetrotting. Excepting Fiji the first time had same bed for more than 4 nights.... Fiji again .... Otherwise 3 nights in Luang Prabang (Laos), Hoi An (Vietnam), and Siem Riep Cambodia), so good to spread out a bit. Unfortunately my belly has also decided to spread out a bit... No surprise really after 3 months of exotic food and not 1 day without a beer (or three). So also time to start thinking about diets and excercise. As I lie here on this Thai beach. simmering gently in the tropical heat with waves lapping my tanned toes, I'm exhausting myself with such thoughts! So intend to enjoy last few days enjoying the memories of the last few months, perfecting my tan, honing my ... read more

After saying goodbye to Bangkok he headed south on a sleeper bus, Jen and Amana sat together so I managed to get a bit of 'Craig Time' while the girls chatted the night away. It was Amanas first night bus, she was racking up those travelling points fast! It wasn't a great bus to get rest on, stopping every couple of hours and switching all the lights on for breaks, toilet stops, letting passengers on (I know.... those bloody passengers, how dare they!) We arrived in Surat Thani with it still being dark and all of us feeling especially knackered. We got straight on the ferry, which was actually a very nice journey, watching the sunrise against the sea and the multiple islands. When we all got ready to leave the boat we noticed a group ... read more
