We left for Thailand at 4:30 am Christmas morning, which is a pretty depressing time to be awake if you’re not on your way to Thailand. We flew first to Guangzhou, my third Chinese airport, and my favorite. They had way more food and entertainment options than the others did, so we spent a fine time on our 3.5 hour layover. Ali bought an iPad game and we spent a good deal of the time trying to figure out what the heck we were supposed to do next, which mainly involved us yelling things like, “Maybe you can dig up the blood with that piece of wood over there!” and making everyone around us feel uncomfortable. As we were getting on the plane and having our tickets checked, we found out that Lindsey was not on ... read more

Another overdue blog. Have you noticed how few we’ve posted on this trip? Yes, we have too – we’re lazy, we know. At the end of the last blog we had just arrived in Koh Phangan. As I said before, we didn’t spend much time there on the last trip, so we really wanted to spend a bit more time exploring the island. After we left Ban Kai we headed up to the north east of the island, over the very bumpy mountain pass, to Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach. This is one of the places I’d heard so many good things about – many travellers rate this as the best beach on the island. It’s not. Still damn good though. We spent 5 days here in the excellent Longtail Resort and had a super relaxing ... read more

Koh Phangan, once an idyllic island famed for it’s amazing turquoise waters sitting in front of a backdrop of white sand beaches and lush jungle. It was the destination of choice for long term backpackers and hippy ex-pats, who would once see out their whole allocation of Visa on this relaxed and remote island, some still do. It is now however more unfortunately known for its party scene and the monthly full moon parties. This lead’s me nicely on to the title of this blog; The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Good We disembarked from our ferry at Thong Sala pier in Koh Phangan at the re-scheduled time of 7am and thanks to the early arrival, the taxi mafia were still fast asleep so we had a relatively relaxing stroll to our pick-up ... read more

I wake up on January 2nd still feeling sick. The White Russians on NYE probably didn't help but hey... Talon's been trying to get us to climb the big wooded mountain in the middle of the island for a while now (Canadians!) and today is the very last day I feel like doing it. But maybe sweating and a bit of aerobic exercise will help. He thinks its about a 6 hour round trip. Great. We drive to the base of the hill and start walking. I tell him I need to take it at my own pace and he says: “Oh anytime you want to we can start heading down just let me know” and then he disappears off up the mountain taking long strides. I'm beginning to regret my loose tee shirt dress outfit ... read more

I actually did it! Ater going on and on about it for what has felt like forever finally I am travelling! The goodbyes weren't as bad as I expected and the flights out were long and tiring but by 1am the day after we set out, we collapsed into bed in Koh Samui. Being the smart girls we are, we set an alarm so we would have a stress free check out in the morning - unfortunately neither of us were smart enough to change the time off England time oops! So having been woken up by cleaners trying to get in and rushing around to get sorted resulting in a bit of a sweaty mess :), we set off to get a boat to Ko Pha-Ngan. First day in Pah-Ngan was pretty chilled, just getting ... read more

My plan for New Year's Eve was always to meet my friend Kat, a bubbly blonde Essex girl, in Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party. Even as early as September – all the accommodation was booked up in Hadrin so I book another place - Cookies that I think is nearby (in running distance to Hadrin.) It turns out i've actually booked another little beach bungalow on the same chilled out, yogic side of the island as Ananda , my current hotel. So maybe the universe is trying to tell me something. I make my way into Hadrin to see Kat. Its horrible. I think the gorgeous, tranquil beaches on the other side of the island are Koh Phangan's best kept secret. There is no sun today and it takes half an hour in the ... read more

Its Christmas Day! Hooray Hooray, I get up in rather a good mood. Well, it is Christmas! I never had any expectations as to how I would spend it once I knew I was abroad., I figured that I would probably just spend it with myself and that would be cool. But when I surface and make my way to the restaurant for breakfast – Talon the Canadian is there. He asks if I want to hang out, go check out a beach he's heard about somewhere else on the island? and in the absence of anything else to do – I think why not?! When we get there its perfect. The most beautiful little secluded private Christmas day beach ever. Like it was built just for two. Talon lives “to ride” which is snow board ... read more

I awake to the sound of the woman in the room next to me trumpeting her nose like an elephant. Then gagging. Then spitting. And repeat. Shortly after this virtuoso solo performance she is joined in by the sound of a man wretching like he's been possessed by the Anti Christ. This my friends, would be the downside of a detox retreat. Never mind its time for breakfast anyway... The shaded restaurant has chilled out Buddhist chanting playing and overlooks the flat silver line of the sea. I do a double take at a very pretty girl sitting near me. She has wavy brown hair, huge eyes and a nose that wrinkles when she laughs. Jo is an actress/model and a writer and we get chatting. She invites me to the beach and I think well ... read more

I've finally managed to sort the 3 month visa for Thailand and am ready to travel up from Penang in Malaysia to Koh Phangan the island off Thailand famous for the full moon party – which will be my stopping point for at least the next month and a half. My minivan driver takes a shine to me – so after an obligatory photo, no doubt so he can show me off as his falang girlfriend, I get to sit up front. A blessing as some poor sod behind me spends the next 8 hours rammed into the minivan with The Bastard (my backpack) wedged between his knees and the seat in front. We get to Surathani and gradually everyone on the bus is dropped off, except me of course as I need to be taken ... read more

We haven’t blogged for a couple of weeks, so this one’s a bit of a hodge-podge of places. Hue Our (major) final stop in Vietnam was in the historical city of Hue, which was the imperial seat of power from 1802 to 1945, until Ho Chi Minh’s forces took a stroll into town. Hue sits on the banks of the Perfume River (perfumed by what exactly??) and has quite a few sites to see. We spent a few hours looking around the old city (a.k.a the Citidel) and took a tour out to the tombs & pagoda. All were pretty interesting, but we’ve seen better in other places in Asia. Worth a visit though. We stayed at the fabulous Jade guesthouse – the staff here are probably the most customer-focussed we’ve ever experienced. Nothing is too ... read more
