Hi Loyal Followers,
We had a good night sleep in this dorm (with just us in it)- makes the £2/night/person feel like a real bargain! So after talking to the German guy who works in the hostel, he circled lots of things on a map to do around the island. So today we had decided to drive up the west coast to visit Haad Son and Haad Yao beach, two beautiful, deserted, white sand beaches; with hammocks and swings. Afterwards we headed to the northwest reaches of the island to Koh Ma-this was the most impressive beach/island, as the island is reached by a strip of sand that the water washes up over on both sides. We did some snorkeling here too. Not brilliant as the visibility isn’t great, but the water is warm and clean from rubbish.
We left the bike locked at the entrance of all the beaches, the guy at the hostel said bikes are safe around the island, no one takes someone else’s bike. I feel quite safe to, Neil is actually a really good driver!! (Just the occasional reminder to “slow down-we’re in no rush….”).
We passed
two elephant safari areas on the way across the north to a high viewing point out across the north. It was up a huge off road hill, so we left the bike at the bottom and kept repeating the turns along and up all these dirt paths so we would remember where to find the bike. We were on the last part of the journey to the viewing point when these three dogs chased after us barking and growling; we stood still in shock, whilst pooing ourselves (Me more than Neil). I shouted for help because I could here people, but after a few minutes a jeep came around the corner with two local men in it who called the dogs off-I was so relieved that it was only then that I realised my hands and legs were shaking L The guys could see that we were shaken, so pointed towards the bed of the jeep where we could have a ride up to the top-phew.
We took some photos when up the top and then headed back down to find the bike. I had my whistle out this time to scare off any bastard dogs! Luckily
the journey back was dog free.
Once back on the bike we then headed to a waterfall in the middle of the island that we had been recommend going to. We found it ok, but were disappointed. Still we took a few photos and left for the short return journey to the hostel. The island is actually really small, you can travel across it so quickly!
We had a rest for a few hours before heading out to the Amsterdam bar, it was another view point of the sunset. It was a great bar, loads of people, music, a pool, and of course the sunset. We only stayed for one beer though as they were about 4 times more expensive than anywhere else! But if we come back here one day we would spend a lot of time here each evening.
We then rode to Mason’s arms (a typical English pub), one of Neils friends said that the guy that owns it is from Basset, Southampton. Unfortunately the guy wasn’t around.
We had tea at the local food market. I had a mango salad and a big chicken
skewer yum! Neil had spicy papaya salad and pork belly with spicy sauce.
Back in the hostel now- going to finish watching the film Predestination with a nice cold beer!!
Lots of love V&N X
