Me and Nat woke up early as our bus to the airport was at 8am, so the day didn't have the best start. Its no fun waking up at 6.45am when you're on holiday, but we had to eat, pack and get to the bus stop, so we thought it best to get up as early as possible. We made it to the airport in plenty of time and it was actually a very painfree process. by the time we got to the gate it was almost time to fly. The plane turned out to be a tiny little turbo prop plane (as opposed to a jet powered plane), with only 2 rows of 2 inside. How exciting!!
The flight was a good flight and we reached Samui a bit early and since I had a window seat I got to see paradise from the air and it was stunning!! I couldn't wait to see it all close up. Samui airport has to be the prettiest airport I've ever been to. Even the toilets were posh, but then Samui is the island to go to a luxurious spa holiday, so I guess they want your experience to start from the
minute you land. After this though, everything started to go wrong. The first thing that went wrong was Nat popped to the toilet while we were waiting for baggage, but it came out ridiculously quickly and when he came out everyone had gone. I was literally the only one in the airport sat waiting for him. This meant that the minibus taking people around the island had also left, so we had to wait for the next plane to arrive as they need at least 5 people in a mini bus before it will go anywhere. We were originally going to get a short bus ride to the boat port and then head straight across to Koh Phagnan, however the wedding organiser wanted me to meet up with him and pay him for the wedding and talk about what we needed for the wedding, which is fine, except he was on the other side of the island, about an hour away by car and nobody else was going there. In the end it took us over an hour before we found people that would share a minibus with us and we were finally on our way.
We got to
the resort eventually and it was gorgeous, i think it was even nicer than the photos I've seen of it and it didn't look like it had been affected by the recent floods so I was happy. I cant wait for the wedding now!!! However our wedding organiser was nowhere to be seen so we had to wait yet again. Waiting became the name of the game as after he had finally turned up and we had sorted everything our next challenge was to get to Koh Phangan. The boat we were orginally going to get left at 1pm and it was now after 2pm, so we had missed it and I thought the next boat was 3pm, however when we got to the ferry port it turned out that the next boat had been cancelled and we would have to get a boat back to the other side of the island for a ferry that didn't leave until 5.30pm, this boat also got us into Koh Phangan the wrong side of the island so we would have to get yet more transport to the beach we wanted to stay at. It just wasn't our day. Luckily there was a
shop selling beer and we got chatting to a couple of guys, so time flew by quite quickly.
We finally made it to Koh Phangan at 7pm!!! So much later than the originally planned 2pm, but hey at least we were finally here. We tried to get a taxi to Haad Rin, which is the main resort on the island, near where we were staying, but nobody would take us there for under 1000 baht which is nearly 20 quid. For a 15-20 minute journey this is way over the top, its supposed to be 100 baht per person. So Nat rang up our guesthouse and after a long conversation (which probably cost the same as the taxi would have lol) we finally got a free pick up. Hurray, we were finally at our resort Lighthouse Bungalows on Leela Beach. First impressions was that we had picked a really nice resort. You could see the sea from the balcony of our hut and the resort was built into the rocks, with a really picturesque walkway onto the beach.
We decided to head out and explore and see what had changed in Haad Rin, this is when disaster struck.
There has been a lot of really bad unseasonal weather in Koh Phangan recently and the beaches have had a lot of sand washed away and when I was walking along the beach in the dark I hadn't noticed a piece of metal that had been unearthed and I walked into it. It cut open my toe, but worse it destroyed my nail and the whole thing was hanging off, blood pouring out of it. Nat ran back to our room and got some tissue and a sock so we could try and walk into town (its a 20 minute walk usually and thats without injury). We were lucky though a resort further along the beach gave us a lift to a 24 hour clinic, where I had the most painful process I've ever been through. They firstly had to clean my wound which stung, then they injected me with anaesthetic, which was ridiculously painful. I've had tons of injections before and never been bothered, but having one right into the end of your big toe is seriously painful, I screamed out loud, poor Nat looked as upset as I felt. Then once my toe went slightly numb, I say
slightly because I still felt quite a lot of pain, but I wanted to get it over and done with, they pulled out my toe nail. This wasn't even the most painful part, as after that they put iodine all over the raw skin and I think I even bit Nat as they did it. Ouch!!!! if childbirth is the most painful thing you can ever experience then I don't think I can handle it, as a couple of minutes of this pain and I was shaking and crying. What a wimp eh. The Thai girls were lovely though and helped calm me down as did Nat. I was told not to get the dressing wet, but the next day is Songkran - the water festival and I didn't want to miss it!!
