… “babe, can you pass me the light”… I oblige, still sleeping…“Ahhh! I knew it! That thing crawled down my side and my whole leg! I knew it!”… Now I’m awake. Staring, with one sleepy-eye, at a cockroach that Kels is shining the headlamp on that is trapped INSIDE our mosquito net that is supposed to keep the bugs OUT of our bed! Kels is freaked, and rightfully so - cockroaches are disgusting - so I jump into action… I bolt through the overlapping gap in our apparently malfunctioning bug net and turn on the one low-watt light in our bamboo bungalow. I first look at my paperback sitting on the night table, but squishing that bastard would leave a big mess in the bed, and I also remember something about squishing cockroaches releases something like ... read more

On the 7th February, after spending 2 nights in Trang we decided to go move onto Koh Mook, a small island just off Trang. This involved a minibus then our first (of many) trip on a Thailand longboat to Koh Mook. After arriving on a beautiful beach we set off to look for accommodation, when I say set off to look I actually mean accepting the first place we saw despite it being one of the most expensive we had stayed in to date at 800 Baht a night. The next day we went on a trip on a longboat to the Emerald Cave, this involved swimming for about 5 minutes through a cave with only the guide's torch to see where we were going before emerging in a beautiful lagoon. This really was an amazing ... read more

I took a speed boat 4 islands tour. We first went snorkeling off of these 2 uninhabited islands. It was first class. Saw a bunch of coral and tropical fish. Even saw a moray eel. Then we stopped at this island - Ko Kradan - for lunch. Wow, just wow. The place is just so beautiful. There are no words that can do it justice. It's a national park, with amazing beaches, blue waters and fantastic scenery. The beaches are sheltered by evergreens! Evergreens in the tropics! The island is surrounded by other islands, so the scenery is beautiful. Just check out the pictures. We had a picnic lunch right there on the beach. Then after lunch, we went to another island - Ko Muk. This island is known for it's emerald cave. You jump off ... read more

... read more

Best three weeks ever. Fiona and I had hoped to find a quiet spot to write a couple papers for our Masters and decompress after Seoul. We were looking for a nice beach, a quiet bungalow and that was really about it. We got a lot more out of it though than we could reasonably have hoped for. (I know I just ended a sentence with a preposition, no nasty e-mails please Mom. (Yes, I know that was a run-on.)) Not to be too analytical, but I think you can boil down the excellence of the experience to two factors, which these days you'd be hard pressed to separate, Wally and the Island. We'll start with the less interesting of the two. The island has between 4 and 5 large beaches depending on the tides and ... read more

We leave Koh Lipe the way we came - via a longtail boat to the ferry. Its then a 4 hour ferry boat (changing boats once) to Koh Mook. We get the longtail to shore and hump our very heavy bags up a near deserted beach. We walk towards reception looking out for Karen & Wayne, but completely missing them as they were hiding behind hats - which should have been so obvious !! Just as we are checking in they creep up behind us and give us a great surprise. Much hugs and kisses later we dump our bags in the room and settle down to Changs (the local strong beer) to talk about everything that has been happening. Eventually we decide a bit of laying on the beach is in order, while Bill visits ... read more

I was excited to be spending a whole day of doing nothing today. Matt had agreed to go on a trip with a few other people as he was keen to see some caves on the island, but to be honest, I was just so pleased to be in such a pretty spot that I didn’t want to leave. I was also secretly looking forward to a bit of time on my own to give me a chance to think about my plan for when I get home. Breakfast was the best we’d had so far in Thailand and maybe on the whole trip. It was a big buffet with everything you could want - bacon, pancakes, croissants, toast, rolls, freshly made omelettes - everything. We ate for a very long time making the most of ... read more

I was more than ready to move on, so was happy to see the speedboat pulling up to the beach for us at 8.30am. We thought we were joining a tour group for the lift, but it turned out that it was purely a transfer boat to different islands and resorts. I was pleased we got on when we did as we had our pick of seats, a few minutes later the boat was packed out and a few people had to sit at the back where they got drenched. I felt excited when we finally pulled up at the Sivalai Beach Resort on Ko Mook. I recognised it from the website pictures immediately and this time they didn’t lie. The boat pulled in to the whitest, softest sand I’d seen in a very long time ... read more
