Well it has been about a week since I last blogged anything for you guys (both family tuning into our travels and you other travelers looking for tips). Since we last showed you our progress we were in Pak Bara again waiting for transportation to Krabi, which when we got to our bus in Trang, we found out the bus went further west after Krabi so we just stayed on the thing and paid the difference. In that process, there was a Swede and a Kiwi girl who met on Koh Tao and were travelling together trying to make it to Krabi as well, and the minibus company ended up giving us a 'transfer' that was one ticket for all four of us, and with a 2 hour 'layover' in Trang we had no choice but ... read more

no, not that wet cold one from the movie, I am talking about the paradise that is Koh Lipe. Amy and I are currently hanging out in Pak Bara waiting for our air-con, a big deal by the way, minibus to Krabi where we hope to make it to Khao Lak tonight, so we can catch our live aboard boat tomorrow around 3pm. We will be off comm for the next few days, so please be patient with our entries. Since we last talked, we hit the island of Koh Lipe, which is this itty bitty little speck of a tropical paradise with white sand beaches, giant coral reefs in 4 ft of water right off the beach and restaurants that put hammocks and mats out on the sand around sunset so you can eat, drink ... read more

Since we last spoke we had just landed in Kanchanaburi and were headed out to the Tiger temple to cheat death and rub a wild beast's belly. We ended up catching a minibus out to the camp for 240 baht and spending 3 hours roaming around this Tiger camp. The rules are VERY strict about what is allowed in both behaviors and clothing color. No reds, oranges or anything else that might look like a nice Farang Steak. It was a bit of an assembly line where they grab your camera away from you and hold your hand, literally, through the whole thing just to make sure you make all the 'correct' motions and behaviors. After Amy and I got our piccs, we headed up to the other section of the camp/temple to see the 2 ... read more

from Koh Lanta we came to Koh Lipe, which is in the Tarutao National Marine Park we missed the ferry by an hour and Maya was on a mission to find some other way to get over here, I was ready to give up when nobody would help us and we repeatedly got laughed at by longtail boat people and such then we were walking past a cargo boat and the guys loading it checked us out and Maya went over and got us a lift on it, 5 am, 300 Baht and we were the only women, only westerners and they thought it was quite the novelty. they fed us and tried to talk to us in broken English, but mostly we laughed and they laughed at us. we also saw tonnes of dolphins along ... read more

Happy Easter Everyone!!! Koh Lipe - our last stop in Thailand. It took us hours and hours to get there. The minibus that we got from Koh Lanta took 2 hours to get to Trang. Then, from Trang, we had to get another minibus that took another 2 hours to the pier at Pak Bara. We then got on the ferry to Lipe that took 5 hours!!! There is no pier at Lipe so the boats don't dock. Instead, longtail boats come to meet the boat a little way offshore. This involved more tricky maneuvers - as we were clambering from boat to boat!!! Koh Lipe (pronounced Ko Lee Pae) is one of a group of islands that fall within the Koh Turatao range of islands, but falls just outside of Koh Turatao Marine National Park. ... read more

These pictures are from time spent on the Andaman coast. We went all the way south to the Malaysian border and spent a week or so between the islands of Koh Tarutao national park which includes the islands in the pictures but not Koh Lipe as it has become a place where sea gypsy's live and now fishermen. It is still part of the same group of islands and very quiet like the rest. We hired a longtail boat and spent a day swimming and snorkeling between 5 of the many islands. The snorkeling quickly provided some of the best marine life I have ever seen - incredible colours and shapes and so many different species of fish and coral. We went in search of waterfalls and found rocks to jump off. walked the length of ... read more

We're back in Thailand. After a very long journey (1 Plane, 5 Trains, 5 Buses, 1 Boat, 1 Taxi and 1 Rickshaw!) we arrived on Koh Lipeh, a small island in the Anderman Sea. Here we met up with James & Hayley from home and also Dan & Teedy (also from Nottm). We'd heard a lot about Lipeh from James & Hayley (and Nick) and we weren't dissapointed. A great island, nothing to do, just what we like! Vast amounts of Sang Som (Whiskey) were consumed and a great time was had by all.... read more

It's my 6th day on this small island in the south of Thailand. I hadn't planned on staying more than 4 days, really, since there are other places in Thailand I would still like to see before I board that plane headed back to America. I wish I could say my reasons for staying longer were due to making new friends or just really digging the island, but actually that wouldn't be the case (although the island is great!). You see, I've been way too sick to do much of anything the last 3 days. I did get myself checked into one of the few bungalow operations (Mountain Resort) with air conditioning to help fight the high fever I've been battling. Although DeZee Bungalows has a lot of character, it wasn't the place for me while ... read more

Snowbirds beware, I've entered bikini territory. I hate the fact that I've completley skipped winter this year because I do enjoy the changing of the seasons but I suppose that the substitution of sand and sunshine rather than snow shovels and ski hats isn't all too bad. I was shocked to say the least by difference of cultures simply on either side of the Thai/Malay border. While Malaysia was enjoyable if you were to seek out your own happy spot, I think I might die here in Thailand from an overdose of the fun button. As delicately as I can say this, the Muslim community of Malaysia was not the most welcoming, and while I know that it was of no fault of my own, but more to be blamed on the ongoing clashing between religious ... read more

It's not easy getting to Koh Lipe, an island in the south of Thailand. Although it is only 1-2 hours by boat from my previous location, the island of Langkawi, it's not quite that simple. The problem is that Langkawi is in Malaysia and Koh Lipe is in Thailand. There is that small issue of immigration. There are ways around that...but I went the safe way even though it took me a full day via multiple modes of transportation (as my title describes). After leaving my hotel in Langkawi at 7:45 a.m. yesterday, I arrived in Koh Lipe at around 5:00 p.m. I was thankful that I had booked a room (at Asia Beach Resort) prior to my ferry departure in Pak Bara. I had heard rumors that all the decent accommodation on the island was ... read more
