Bon parlons voyage! Nous ... read more

While planning this trip I had the occuring feeling that it wasn't going to happen. I guess with an adventure this grand it just seems almost too much; fantasy like in a way. Our computer's screensaver in Santa Barbara had a picuture of a beautiful beach in Thailand on it for months. Every once and a while it would change to a waterfall or some other picturesque location, but always Thailand. It's a strange feeling when you seem to have jumped inside the screensaver. That's exactly what has happened. Mike and I have been spending time on the most stunning beaches we've ever seen. We joked that we feel like we are in a Corona commercial. It's a bit nuts. How did we get so lucky to see this beautiful place? We just have to pinch ... read more

Hi again all... Well I had just left Lao this morning and was in the city of Nong Khai... But just seeing the place I knew that I had to leave as soon as i could... My plan at that moment was to find a train station and get to that dirty city called Bangkok... That way I could have enough time to find a nice place to relax on a beach.... I found the train station and got a ticket to Bangkok for 688Baht... That was for a sleeper and the train left at 6pm that evening... That gave me about 5hrs to check out this small town... So I just walked around the town and along the Mekong looking at the other side that was Lao.... I allready miss the place.... On my way ... read more

Well, we both had big smiles on our faces when we arrived in Lipe, we found our paradise!!! The longed for white beaches, clear green waters, and Thai hospitality which we so loved last time we were here, were evident minutes after crossing the border from Malaysia... An ill James, and an eager to leave Karen got the minibus from Penang - Malaysia, across the border to a hub city called Hat Yai, where we changed and journeyed on an open back taxi, followed by 3 hours worth of local buses, followed by another open back taxi to a port town called Pak Barra, where we overnighted before a 2.5 hour speedboat to our final destination - Ko Lipe. Quite a mission, but it went unbelievably smoothly. It was as though they knew we were coming ... read more

23.12.06, BKK, Thailand; I am nervously standing at the international arrival gate, shifting my weight from one leg to the other and back. My feet and hands move uncontolled. Like I am listening to a fast and mind-spinning techno beat! But I am not, I am simply over excited, a little girl waiting for her santa (in my case Nina and her Mum). But they take too long, by the time they arrive I have had to sit down (the last two days where unorganised, hectic and dominated by a lack of sleep). Despite my exhaustion, I am fully back on--it feels so good to finally wrap your arms around a good old friend. Another flight to Hat Yai (Air Asia, less than 75 $ for the 3 of us), a good-night-sleep and off we went ... read more

After one of the most drawn-out boat journeys ever, we finally came ashore at Pattaya beach on the beautiful island of Ko Lipe. This island is in the national marine park of Ko Tarutao, which is in the most southern part of Thailand. Correspondingly, as we would soon discover, it was exhaustingly hot, and full of pesky flies. Nevertheless, this gorgeous piece of paradise had enough about it to keep us there for a good week. It didn't take us long to settle back into Thai beach-life after the relative arduity of Malaysia. The sea was perfection itself, inviting us into its dreamy-blue bliss at very regular intervals. It was the perfect antidote to the relentless sun. Finding some cheap accomodation in the form of a tent (for the first time in our trip), we soon ... read more

The sail from Ko Mai Pai to Ko Lippi was pretty uneventful other than the stop we had a AoNack… a small island in the Taruatuo National Marine Park. Keely is the only certified diver in the group - so she and Ray went down for a quick half hour dive while the rest of us snorkeled. The snorkeling was incredible!!!! I haven’t ever seen a reef so beautiful and active. The snorkeling we did at Phi Phi Lei was comparable - but this, by far, surpassed that day by leaps and bounds. Jay, Karl and I could not believe the number of sea urchins - and they are HUGE here. Their spikes alone must be 6 inches long. At one point, we drifted inland trying to get to the sandy beach but couldn’t reach the ... read more

We arrived in Satun and got immediatly brought to a travel agency that somehow managed to sell us tickets to a tiny island called Koh Lipe. Unfortunatly the boat of the day had already gone so we had to stay and take the boat of the next day. It was clearly a new country. I would say I could see the standard dropping exiting the boat. It was a bit hard as I have grown to like Malaysia a lot. We got a cheap room which smelled of sewer. Just a walk around town to see where things are and get money. It was quite hard to find anything as most signs are in Thai not in English as in Malaysia. And it is the same with the people, they speak not as good English. Oh ... read more
