aAfter a long cold dreary winter we have, at last, finalised plans to escape to the sunshine. We spent December 2016 and January 2017 in Thailand catching up with Sharon, Scott and the children who were on a twelve month trip around the world. Quite an adventure with a two year old and a four year old and we loved being part of it. So when they announced they were setting off for a second trip it was too good an opportunity to miss to catch up with the grandchildren again. Also after the trauma they'd been through watching forest fires then mud slides come a hair's breadth from destroying their home back in California, I felt the need to do the ' mothering' thing. Not to mention a couple of health scares, too, while all ... read more

I'm writing this from the ferry from Koh Lanta to Krabi. My initial plan to go to Koh Lipe, a beautiful island / nature reserve, with excellent diving opportunities, was not working for me anymore. It takes half a days travel to reach it and another to go back. Since I also want to do some climbing (Ton Sai or Railay beach in Krabi) and wanted to be back in Bangkok with at least a day to spare, I would have had only one full day there. Together with the relatively expensive/boring journey and the expected bad weather, I opted for a different route instead. Booked a ticket from Krabi to Bangkok, by air, on the 4th, so I can stay there at least one night before the train leaves, maybe see Khao San road and ... read more

I'm in Koh Lanta now, nice island. Also a place where I'm realizing how little time I have left, before I need to be back in Bangkok. I planned a little on this rainy day. I'm going to Koh Lipe (snorkling/diving) next, on the 27th. Then back to Krabi (Ao Nang) and arrange some climbing on 'climbing paradise' Railay beach and Ton Sai. It's a bit more expensive, on the islands. A lot of items and food, are about twice the price it was back in the north. Probably just the price for supplying an island.. Slacklines hostel is nice. I prepared this review for later: "Good place! There's a dorm for about 8 people and a couple of bungalow huts. I stayed at the dorm, which is spacious, has fans and mosquito nets. Relaxed atmosphere, small ... read more

We arrived in our guesthouse in Koh Lanta and went to the beach. We walked to a beach we had seen on a guidebook that was said to be a beautiful long white sand beach... Imagine our disappointment when it turned out to be a rocky brown sand beach where swimming was unsafe! Unimpressed with the north of Koh Lanta island, and considering going to the south was 300 bath per person for 20 Kms (which is very overpriced!), we booked a ride to another nearby island. On the next day, we planned to go to Ko Mook for a few days, and then come back straight to the south of Koh Lanta (so we don't have to pay for the overpriced journey!). After our ride from our guesthouse to the pier, we get told our ... read more

Whoever would have thought that island life would suit us?! We decided to take a minibus from Krabi to Koh Lanta and return by boat a few days later. That was probably the right decision as it meant we got there a couple of hours earlier. The trip involved a transporter ferry which was fun, and a brand new bridge, only a year old. Taking the minibus also meant that we were taken door-to-door which saved a lot of hassle. Our first thoughts of Golden Bay Cottages were good. The cottages themselves were comfortable enough but they were a little expensive. We loved swimming in the pool and adored lying on the beach and splashing about in the Andaman Sea. The sunsets were to die for. We were having a very relaxing time. Two things tarnished ... read more

Ko Lanta Admittedly my last blog on Phi Phi was a little angry. Long trips to places that aren't fruitful do that to you. Luckily Ko Lanta turned out to be a massive improvement. Well after the first half a day anyway! After docking we took a short stroll from the pier to our beach front room. It was very cheap so I had low expectations. Unfortunately it was awful and not as described. I could go on but in short we got our money back and got out of there faster than a cheetah in a race. The apartment around the corner was much better. Everything we needed along with an on site pool and gym. Once again no free weights. How am I to make gains? We hired a moped and went exploring, found ... read more

Jumping out of the taxi at Long Beach I walked 200m or so and found a sweet little bungalow right off of the beach. Cost - $500b ($16.66USD) negotiated down from $600b. This is where traveling alone is becoming a disadvantage. The accommodation costs are rising for me. If I had someone to split the cost with a price of $8.33US per night is much more palatable. But who am I to complain when dinner with a beer costs $4USD. And man the food here in Thailand is among the best of my trip to date. The sea here is so tranquil and unbelievably calm. With its shimmering turquoise gleam it is nearly impossible for me to imagine the carnage, destruction, and loss of life suffered here back in 2004 from the Boxing Day Tsunami. This ... read more

We've been here three days now and I can easily say Koh Lanta is my fave! It's so relaxed, warm and as I mentioned previously the beaches are amazing! We love it so much we've extended our stay to 5 days. We've had to room hop though, for some reason our hotel don't have the common sense to just move the people they had in our room into the new room they are putting us into, despite the fact they're the same type of room... oh well, it means we get a nice fresh bed every night so no biggie! We went back to our little beach bar today for lunch, had a delish strawberry milkshake which had a little flower in it! Then we headed down to the beach in an attempt to get some ... read more
