Today was a very mixed day, having said goodbye to Fez, it was now time to say hello again to a dear friend, Guus that I met on Koh Tao. He only had 9 days to go before heading back home to Belgium so we decided to meet up again and spend his last days together. We met in town and boarded the bus to Trat where we would pick up the ferry to Koh Chang. Koh Chang is the second biggest island in Thailand and is a national park, so unlike Phuket (The largest island) it is covered in jungle that inhabits monkeys and apparently wild elephants. We arrived at the resort he had stayed at previously on Lonely Beach and got ourselves a bungalow that was only 2 minutes’ walk from the beach. Koh ... read more

Amai, zoveel beenruimte en bagageruimte hadden we ... read more

Koh Chang is welcoming more and more tourists every year, but it still has little bit of this wild beauty, that those not-yet-spoiled places have. Since they didn't finish the road around the whole island yet, the western side like Lonely beach is the one where you'll almost 90% of them. On the other side and after you pass Ko Chang Tai, there are very few of them, and if you go to Ko Phrao Nai, or Ko Phrao Nok - which you can do by renting a kayak, there are almost only natives, if anybody at all. After arrival, we decided for the southern part, so we was offered to be taken with a lovely lady from the harbor and her husband. There are many taxis on the island, but as I said, almost all ... read more

We got up just in time for breakfast today and then got ready for our excursion. We were going to go for a 2 hour elephant trek through the jungle! It cost us 900 BHT each but I think it was totally worth it! Our elephant was the cutest ever. She kept randomly stopping to eat along the trail and every time the guide was like "Hey! Keep going!" she'd just grab a bigger branch LOL! Part of our trek was to go swimming with her at the end. She was SO excited to go swimming! Lots of elephant cheering and such once we hit the river. Hadeer and I had come prepared with our swimsuits so we were all set to go. We were't sure how the swimming part of it was going to work ... read more

All told it took us about 7 hours to get to Koh Chang. The bus we had booked through the travel agent left Bangkok at 9;30 AM and didn't arrive at the pier to Koh Chang until about 3:30 PM. The driver made a few random stops along the way to pick up various items from shops to deliver to other places. The bathroom on the bus was SKETCHY and gross. Was VERY thankful to have the toilet seat covers and travel TP Mom put in my stocking for Christmas. They have both come in VERY handy on this trip! From the port the ferry took a half hour and then we piled into the back of a converted pickup truck for a terrifying drive through the mountains. No one fell out the back and we ... read more

Breakfast at 'Apples' on the beach. Then rode around the islad the opposite way to yesterday (25km). It is a nicer route, cleaner and greener. We stopped at BangBao and walked along a long pier lined with shops and guesthouses on stilts. Had a fruit shake, then drove on to a beauty spot which was worth it indeed. Found the elephand camp and booked our two hour trek for tomorrow morning. Tonight we left our flip flops in our room and walked along the beach to a restaurant with tables on the sand. While we waited for our meal we watched the Fire Dancers with their sticks and pois. Our 'tuna' arrived, it was actually an overcooked white fish and our mussels that had been barbecued and were stuck to their shells. The chips were good ... read more

The mosquitoes need to be exterminated! They are making my life a misery! Mark has a poorly tummy today so we have stayed close to the room. We popped over the road for a yoghurt and fruit breakfast, then laid on the bed and woke up at 3.30pm, went to the shop for water and sat on the deckchairs outside our room. I have had itchy feet and legs all day - driving me maaaaaaaaad. Had dinner in Buffalo Bills (very nice) and went to bed.... read more

Breakfast was from 7 Eleven today - crabstick sandwich, yakult drink, yoghurt with cereal and pineapple from the fruit stall. We had a long Skype chat with Jessica and then laid on the beach. White Sands beach is aptly named, lots of fine white sand leading down to a warm sea. I finished my book, Mark went for a swim, Mark played with sand, Mark got bored so we went to Nua Beng for takeaway fishcakes for his lunch. Then we went to an internet cafe to book an early flight home which proved not as easy as we thought. Now all stressed we went and floated in the sea. We had a lengthy wade through warm, clear water before we were far out enough to turn and contemplate Koh Chang. The white beach is lined ... read more

After a breakfast of fruit, we took the scooter back and went on our elephant trek. This was fantastic, although in the first five minutes I wanted to get off. Our elephant was called Dua (Star) and aged 30 years. We both sat in the seat on her back that was tied with ropes under her belly, her tail and her chin. When she walked we wobbled from side to side and we were sooooooo high up!! We trekked through a rubber plantation and a pomelo orchard which took about 40 minutes. Then we stopped for 20 mintures at a rock pool, here we helped the mahout (elephant owner) wash Dao, we splashed water onto her and scrubbed her with a hard brush. She blew water over us too. Then I got onto her back and ... read more
