Kayaking!
Our second full day in Samui didn’t begin until about 2pm……..as we rolled out of bed our stomachs rumbled and once again food was on order. Eventually, with the mixed weather conditions, the sun finally shone through the blackened clouds and we hit the beach for a couple of hours, enjoying the golden sand and clear blue sea. I have to say it was a different league to our beach holiday last year! This was probably one of the most unproductive days of the trip so far as we continued to make the most of the sun, taking obscure photos until sunset. Evening came and we prepared for the following day……….
After a day of rest, we were ready for more action. We had booked a tour to Anthong National Marine Park - west of Samui. Main activities included kayaking around the national park island - consisting of 40 or so islands, snorkeling and some mountain trekking.
A minibus picked us up bright and early in the morning and we headed for the pier before boarding a ferry towards the national park. We armed ourselves with a paddle and lifejacket before jumping into the deep blue sea
for some paddle action. We navigated through caves and rock formations taking in the distant views. A few bumps and scratches later, our canoe docked the shores where we climbed to the top of a stepped mountain for a view of a magnificent lagoon.
After lunch, we headed to the main island of the national park. We failed to climb the steep slopes caked in monkey poo so decided to take a dip in the sea and soak up some golden sunshine! Even an elderly gentleman managed to make it all the way to the top and see the magnificent view that had been waiting for us. Oh the shame! We headed back down to more familiar ground and commenced our snorkeling session. It seemed fairly odd at first breathing through the mouth but soon got used to it. I also learned that when snorkeling, it is not a wise decision to dip your head too far as I learned that salt water can cause excessive choking. Post snorkeling - not really much to see apart for some grayish/brownish coral and a few fishies / spikey sea urchins lingering around - we headed back onto the ferry and returned to
Samui for some much needed rest.
Ladyboy Antics
The following day was uneventful due to extreme levels of precipitation. We amused ourselves by beginning our drinking fest whilst waiting for the rain to clear. We tried to used the dvd facilities available but the choice of film was unsuitable for tsz wai (it was ‘knowing’ with Nicolas Cage). Giving up on this, evening came and we were ready for the scariest show in town (even scarier than knowing). We hit a few more bars prior to our arrival at the LadyBoy Cabaret. The night did get messy due to over-consumption of alcohol by one member of our party and hence resulting in an unpleasant last night at Samui. This had to be our light weight female friend! Anyway the show was exceeding scary, with men being women or women being men…….it sent shivers down my spine. Tsz Wai found it greatly entertaining and we were even luckily enough to have photos with the gang after, although as expected, they wanted to juice our money!
The ride home (or walk) was not pretty as Tsz Wai was like a blindfolded jenson button on his a warm up
lap. Eventually, we made it home and the following will not be published. You can use your imagination or ask the perpetrator herself. By the time it was bedtime, erm about 2am, I knew the next day would drag! We had to check out at 6am that morning for a taxi to the airport and as expected our drunky friend was hung over. We left the hotel and arrived at the airport for our early flight at Ko samui airport. It was pretty funcky as the straw roof mud hut check in desk was far from the virgin check in desk at heathrow terminal 3!
Note from Tsz Wai:
Flying whilst suffering a hangover is highly recommended for those who wish to successfully forget their fear of flying-instead, your concentration is occupied with the task of acting sober through customs and preventing nasty accidents such as being sick at 35,000 feet! Good thing I was not able to focus my full attention on our plane-it was so old that it relied on propellers to fly us to Phuket and I’m sure Chris was not all too convinced that it would do its job in getting us to our destination
in one piece. To our relief, and only after about 30 minutes in the air, we arrived safe and sound, spending the rest of the day recovering from our ladyboy-filled night.
