Our last entry was made on Dec 20. We spent time in Mae Hong Son from Dec 21 to Dec 25. On Dec 20, we relaxed in Mae Sariang and tried to go to the hotsprings, but did not succeed. On Dec 21, we travelled from Mae Sariang to Mae Hong Son. It took 4 hours and 90B (Just over US$2 each). The bus was not too full. From the bus station, it is less than1 KM walk to Mae Hong Son guest house. Phyllis complained as Gary refused to pay 40B each for a tuk-tuk to take us there. The guesthouse cost 150B for one night, bueatiful garden, with shared bath and no sound insulation in the thin wooden panels between rooms. At dinner time, we strolled around and found a food stall that served ... read more

The night markets in Chiang Mai were pretty much the same as we'd already seen - you get tired of seeing the same old stuff over and over (especially when it's cheaper somewhere else). Will probably hold off doing any more shopping until we hit bangkok again, otherwise my backpack will explode. We split into teams of 2, me being with milney (diesel) who did have a compass on his watch in case we got lost. I picked up a couple of presents and a new metrosexual watch (to match my other metrosexual watch back at home). This one has a baby blue strap!! Milney and I stopped off for dinner in some place which may or may not have served rat disguised as meat. We ordered the same thing so at least the next day ... read more

Chiang Mia has been quite a pleasant surprise so far. First of all, my hotel room is the best I have had in Thailand so far. It is a 4 star for certain as my travel agent told me. Nice sofa in the room, choice of bathrobe colors, a comfortable king sized bed, and it includes a great outdoor breakfast buffet. There is a swimming pool that I will have to check out later today. Chiang Mai is a bit cooler since we are in the mountains, but not too bad. I bought a nice polartec type sweater for $5. I will also be looking for a pair of jeans since I will need some casual long pants for the evening. The city is very nice. My hotel is near the old city wall with a ... read more

We woke up and smashed a nice breakfast at that Bamboo place with bacon, eggs, toast, sausage etc. We then thought it would be a great idea to rent motorbikes for the day and go check out some of the temples in the mountains. For only about $6 AUD we got a bike and insurance (most likely will need this puppy) and we set off, having little idea of how to drive the bikes or where we were going. It's funny that they show you where the accelerator is but not the road rules. We soon worked it out after running 3 red lights - THERE ARE NO RULES. I was pretty much scared the whole time while we were driving in the city but i soon got used to it. We took a couple of ... read more

I am writing this from a free internet terminal provided by Bangkok Airways in their terminal at Bangkok. I arrived at the airport on Koh Samui for an 8:10 am flight early so they put me on an earlier flight to Bangkok and also and earlier flight Chiang Mail. This sure beats about a 17 hours bus and ferry ride to Koh Samui. The flight was only 45 minutes! I am saving another 14 hours or so taking the plane to Chiang Mai. By air, Chiang Mai is about an hour or so. Bangkok Airways gives free coffee, tea, cake, internet access, and even popcorn while waiting for the flight. US airlines could learn a lot from the level of service and nice freebies provided here. I got an offer on my former rental condo and ... read more

We are currently having our first snow storm in Innoshima (and hopefully the last), which made me think of warmer days in Thailand. It reminded me that I have yet to write about my fabulous winter vacation. I truly have meant to (and started even), but I just got caught up in work/play time and being lazy. Now I will begin..... Friday, December 22 at 4:15p.m. my winter vacation began. Off to Thailand the next morning! It couldn't have come at a better time....it was bitterly cold in Japan and I was ready for the heat! I travelled to Osaka that night because I had an early flight on the 23rd. Due to the abnormal weather (ie. the tinest bit of snow...Japan can't take it like Canada!) all of the trains were backed up. After meeting ... read more

We touched down in Chiang Mai airport on the 23/12. From the airport we got a taxi into town and started looking for a place to stay (literally walking up and down ally-ways). We found a flier that said 5-stars Guesthouse and thought this must be the ticket. A tuk tuk came past and saw us reading the flyer so she drove us there 3 people at a time. After arriving at the hostel we organised a few things (3 day trek around the mountains and Laos visas) and then headed out for some chow around the corner. While we were at the hotel, we booked tickets for thai boxing (muaw thai or something) for that night. Dinner was just down the road at a new restaurant (only 1 month old) called Bamboo *something* (don't remember), ... read more

6 Nights Our last days in Thailand before Laos have definately been some of the best we have had! After returning from Pai we went back to our wonderful AU$2.50 a night guesthouse and decided to check out the Chaing Mai Night Bazaar which is an array of markets, restaurants and cool things to see. We scored some great bargains; new fisherman's pants, shorts and shirts (I have thrown out some of my 'western' clothes and decided to dress thai style). It is good times bartering with the market stall owners and walking away with 3 bags full of clothes and stuff for AU$20 is my idea of a smart shopping trip. The inner child came out in Rane and I when we bargained hard for some 'laser' pointers so we could be juvenile and point ... read more

"Don't ever show that you are in pain, don't ever show that you are tired. You do that in the ring and it's over, you are beaten. When you are tired, show that you are strong, in pain, breath and focus on your move, that is the way to win. This is not just in muay Thai but life..." - Pedro - Muay Thai Kruu. My life as an experience junky has become all about variety and experiencing new things, there is a whole world to see and a lifetimes worth of learning available. In each part of the world there are histories, traditions, arts, crafts, languages, skills and sports that can be learned. I wanted an experience in Thailand that was authentic, hard work, and would teach me something about life and myself. Muay Thai, ... read more
