Crossing the Nan River
We boarded a wooden ferry to cross the Nan River. It shaved about 90 Km off our existing route. So it’s riding day 7. The weather today was HOT and my ass is really starting to hurt. Oh, and did I mention that I had extremely spicy food last night and I ate dried squid from a street vendor? I did all I could today just to stay upright on my bike. Ah… what a morning.
สวัสดี S̄wạs̄dī - Hello from the beautiful, ancient city of Sukhothai, Thailand! After breakfast, we left the city of Nan and rode through more winding mountainous roads along the Nan River until reaching the Sirikit Dam Reservoir. In order to shave about an hour and a half off our ride today, we boarded a wooden ferry and took the motorcycles across the reservoir. After crossing the reservoir, we continued riding for about another two hours until reaching the Sirikit Dam. The Sirikit dam is the largest earth dam in Thailand and is used for irrigation, fisheries, flood control and as well as hydro-electric power generation. The roads leading up to the dam were some of the worst roads we've encountered so far. Huge potholes, broken pavement, and even stretches of road that had been completely missing. I figured this was an appropriate image for this particular post. lunch and then continued riding on passing through lush, green, rice fields until reaching the small historical town of Sukhothai. We visited the Ancient Sukhothai Historical Park which, in 1991, was designated as a world heritage site by the UNESCO Heritage Organization. We finished our day with an amazing sunset overlooking the ancient ruins at the park.
