Today was destined to be a long day, longer for some than for others, let me explain. There is a tradition that early in the morning locals would go to the local temple and give alms to the Monks. One could give money or food or whatever. It was the only way the Monks get something to eat. So if you wanted to do this you had to get up at 5:30. If you did this, you would receive good luck and a blessing from the Monks. Sorry but no thanks. About 6 brave souls did go. Barb, came back and told me a very interesting story. At first, she really wanted to go, but she was tired the night before and she decided to skip it. While she was sleeping she heard or felt something ... read more

It was early in the afternoon when I finished the zip lining and my adrenaline rush was calming down. The bus rolled along the winding mountain roads of North Chiang Mai and dropped me in front of the lodge nestled in lush green trees of the tropic. Not a soul around. I slung my back pack from the shoulder and slowly walked inside the lodge. Soon I crossed the gate; I found the office room of the lodge. A lady was busy working on her paperwork. “Sawasdee Krab”, I said mildly. She looked up and returned my gesture “Sawasdee Kaa”. I love the way Thai ladies end their sentence with “kaa”….a melody dripping from the sky. My friends Alex and Oppy who operate a travel service in Chiang Mai, fixed me up the lodge. “You will ... read more

I was daunted............... The staircase rose in front of me, all the way to the top of the mountain. Was that a cloud at the pinnacle ?! It looked like a thousand stairs, but according to ' google ', only 309!! Google wouldn't mislead me, would it? We'd already braved the winding road to get there, spent half an hour searching for a parking, and made our way through hoards of people. I had to 'tackle' this ! Well, it's true. Slow and steady wins the race. We made it. GASP. I left my shoes ( and my husband ) and entered the temple. I'm not sure why he thought he needed to keep an eye on our shoes.....definitely NOT Gucci......but there you have it. He missed some beautiful sights. The photos follow. Hope you enjoy ... read more

On our original plan we weren’t sure whether we would go to Chang Mai. The easy route would be to go to Bangkok and either fly or train. It was due north and we needed to head south towards Singapore. Two things forced our hand one was if we flew into Thailand we got a 30 days’ visa as opposed to a 15 days one, the other was that Alison wanted to see some elephants. There wasn’t a direct flight so we took two Air Asia flights, the first a short hop to Bangkok then an hour north to Chang Mai. This city is known for three things temples, elephants and cuisine. We were going to experience all three during the next 3 days. On coming out of the airport the first thing we noticed was ... read more

So, here I am sweating on my nice little balcony in Chiang Mai, Thailand, drinking tea and eating fresh bananas. After a 36 hour trip by bus and plane, I arrived here last night, with my bike. This is it, an old dream coming true. However I feel like a newbie, not really knowing yet how I am going to manage to find my way in foreign countries with foreign alphabets, on my bike, and how my old body will cope, but at least I will give it a try. Even if the trip just started, I already have a few small adventures to tell. The first one happened as I was still in Montreal... I guess I was so focussed on getting my bike on the plane and finding out how much United was going ... read more

We had arrived in Chiang Mai by train around 7-30am, a trip of about 13 hours and 20 minutes. The train was very comfortable – air conditioned and with quite good service and I had slept rather well throughout the night in my upper bunk. I just love train travel. The food on board was also good. You could order dinner and breakfast from a set menu and Ted’s and mine was TBT170 (about AUD$8-50) each, which was good value, as there were 4 small courses for the money. We didn’t worry about breakfast and thought that we would wait until we got to the hotel. It seemed we had brought the rain with us from Bangkok, as it was still raining quite heavily when we arrived at the station. We had only to wait a ... read more

Chiang Mai Walking Food Tour Friday 24 July - Chiang Mai Walking Food tour with our guide Rain - so much food!! Chiang Mai has over 200 wats or temples to visit. met at Wat Chiang Man in the walled city. Chiang Mai's oldest temple was established by the city's founder, Phaya Mengrai, sometime around 1296. The temple contains two famous Buddhas, which reside in the small sanctuary to the right of the main chapel. Phra Sila is a marble bas-relief Buddha that stands about 30cm high and reportedly came from Sri Lanka or India. Phra Sae Tang Khamani , a 10cm high, crystal image, is thought to have come from Lavo (Lopburi) 1800 years ago. In front of the ordination hall the stone slab, engraved in 1581, bears the earliest known reference to the city's ... read more

Happy Saturday, Followers! And a happy Saturday to those of us who have finally finished the dreaded Week 3 of the CELTA course. They've quite literally cranked up the heat on us at school - so a day of rest and relaxation away from that center was a welcome, welcome thing indeed. Yesterday, I declared my plans to do something wildly different with this weekend to my class. Tired of bars and street markets, I was bound and determined to find something uniquely Chiang Mai-ish to do. My original hope was to visit the tigers at the Tiger Kingdom. That idea fell through when the cost to get there plus the cost to hang out in said tigers' cages plus the poor timing all worked together to crash that party. Maybe next time, tigers. There would ... read more

Enjoying our second week over here. In Chiang Mai at the moment after spending a week in Patong on Phuket Island. Had a great sea canoe trip with John Gray Sea Canoes. Awesome scenery and lunch & dinner on boat was delicious. Very good elephant trekking and bamboo rafting at Maetang elephant camp on Monday north of Chiang Mai then a visit to Chiang Dao Cave, a temple carved into the inside of the cave. Finished up at the Orchid Farm, such lovely flowers!!! Today we're fishing for giant catfish among others on a lake near Chiang Mai, it's catch and release and the average fish is around 45kgs!!! The bait is bread and the guides do all the baiting up and releasing, they also row out into the lake to retrieve any rods that may ... read more
