Hi everyone, we are now in Chiang Dao which is in Northern Thailand near the Burmese border and our hotel is in the middle of no where - which is the whole point as we need a day of rest. We have spent the last 2 days in heaven. Actually only a mountain within the Elephant Nature Park is called Heaven but to us the whole place has been heaven. After having Jack, Tracy and I believe it has been the most incrediable time of our lives and yes I have taken HEAPS of photos - almost an entire memory card. I just couldn't help myself. The Elephant Nature Park was set up by one small lady who as a woman in a male oriented culture and as a Burmese hill tribe person with no rights ... read more

A few hours north of Chiang Mai near Chiang Dao is a huge national preservation area, home to a handful of hill tribes and a hell of a lot of trees. Our tour group picked us up at 7am at our guest house in the back of a local bus converted into the trek’s personal transportation vehicle. We were met by 4 other girls in their late 20’s from London who would be joining us for the next 3-days. Loaded up we headed a few hours into the country side all pretty upbeat and looking very much like city people going for a stroll. We arrived at a lovely guest house called the Chiang Dao Nest - it’s a beautiful retreat and was the starting point of our journey. After a quick breakfast we all piled ... read more

We left the hotel at 9.30 in the back of a converted hilux truck with our tour group which consisted of us, Woody our guide, the 2 kiwis we'd met, 2 norwegians, 2 french and 1 german. Our English pride was at stake! After stopping at the market to stock up on rum, we arrived at the elephant trek around 2 hours later. We got to trek on top of elephants and it was fantastic. It was truely amazing and I loved every second of it. They're so big up close but really friendly and seemed peaceful. Our one kept stopping every 4 steps demanding bananas of us! When we stopped to let the elephants have a drink, I got a banana out and all of a sudden there were 3 trunks all sniffing at me ... read more

After being in Chiang Mai for so long I decided that I needed to get away for a long weekend. There aren't so many national holidays in Thailand but on the friday it was the Kings birthday so almost everyone had the day off... this was essential as I was traveling to Chiang Dao with a Thai person. So as I was with a Thai person we took the local bus up there (I wouldn't have done by myself, I didn't even know where to get off and ould have ended up by the Burmese border) which is only about 1.5 hours and in a straight line near enough, and it turned out I was the only farang (foreigner) on the overcrowded bus... so overcrowded in fact that the walkway was full of people, two person ... read more

After having a week in Chiang Mai so we could meet up with Pao (the owner of the apartment we were staying in) and drive up to Chiang Dao together, we got some bad news. Pao was planning on getting to us by catching a flight from Bangkok, which for obvious reasons, he could no longer do. This meant that we had to ring us the place we were staying in Chiang Dao and organise transport to the accommodation through them. Though all in all it wasn’t a problem, it was a shame to not meet up with Pao as it would have been useful to ask him some questions about our next destinations and to thank him for the use of the apartment. Also the transport to the apartment turned out to cost more than ... read more

I've spent the last week working 5-6 hours a day, 6 days a week, on Amee's Farm. It is owned by a Frenchman married to a Thai woman, though they are not currently here. We get to stay in their house though, which is quite nice accommodations. The farm is run by Amee's brother Alea, who lives across the way with his wife, 2 sons (4 and 6), and "the boys" (2 workers aged 18 and 19). They provide us with meals, and plenty of entertainment, but they speak virtually no English. There are also about 6 other Lisu who come each day to work. Work is generally more productive in the morning, doing such tasks as cutting down weeds, hauling rice straw (using a bamboo pole and rope), and plowing the rice paddies in preparation ... read more

The Trek! Birds, bats, bed bugs, mossies and cock-a-doddle-do!!!! We jumped in a taxi to the train station where we were due to be picked up at 7:30 to start our trek. After a two hour drive in the back of our party bus we were taken up into the mountains to the "Nest". A small hide away resort which provided a back to basics feel to it whilst still giving off a feeling of luxury and seculsion. I thought it was a very romantic resort. We left our bags in the main resort and were treated to an amazing breakfast. Potentially the best scrambled eggs I have ever had - next to my own of course! We set off and were introduce to Tori our guide for the day. Tori like to sing and ... read more

I was told to catch the bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Dao, which runs every half hour. I watch as several nearly empty buses leave, which I'm later told are going to Chiang Dao..."mai ben rai" (no problem) I'll wait the 30 minutes. It strikes 4 and another nearly empty bus leaves before I realize I should have been on it, so I ask another driver "Chiang Dao?" He responds by pointing to the bus that is driving past, honks to stop them, and I get on. I try and pay the driver for my fare, and he just waves me to sit down. Walking down the aisle I realize the bus is completely full, so I file to the back and stand there with everyone staring at the only westerner on the bus. Then ... read more
