It's day 4 and the adventure keeps coming! After being collected by songthaew we were taken to an elephant camp on the banks of the Mae Ping river, where we spent most of the day being entertained and hauled around by various modes of animal and non animal transport. It started with a few photo opportunities involving each of us sitting on various parts of the elephants' bodies (which was a bit of a shock...we hadn't even put our bags down before we were sitting awkwardly on an elephant's foot). Phoebe decided this was a bad idea and spotted a baby elephant to feed instead. This was followed by the elephants putting on a show ie dancing, acrobatics, playing musical instruments and doing a painting. The kids thought it was great and the adults kind of ... read more

We awoke to the noise of bells from the local monastery and of course the crowing of the local roosters, and stepped out into misty morning of Malee's garden, with views of Chiang Dao mountain. After breakfast headed into Chiang Dao township to wander around the busy market for a few hours. The kids were great and both made a purchase...Jasper speaking some Thai and bartering the price down from 190 baht to 100 baht! I think the cute kid factor could save us a few baht on this trip! In the afternoon we set out down the dirt road from Malee's to one of the big local attractions...Chiang Dao Cave. We hired a local guide to show us through the huge and impressive network of caves...the kids had a ball...it was very Indiana Jones! Made ... read more

After riding farther north in an overheated sorng-taa-ou for two hours, we arrived in Chiang Dao. The sun was extremely strong and it was scorching hot beating down on my body. We wandered down the street for a moment, before deciding that we were without desire of wandering the streets finding a place to sleep. We talked to a couple of tourists who recommended renting a motorbike and taking it seven kilometers to the Nest, a lovely accommodation (and to boot, a Lonely Planet ‘pick’). We entered the motorbike rental shop and expressed our interest. Five minutes later, after simply leaving David’s passport with the employee, we were proud renters of a Honda motorbike. David kick strated the machine and I sat behind him and we were off. Stop. Go. Stop. Accelerate. Jerk. “Are you sure ... read more

Hey hey!! Had an amazing adventure in the mountains! We decided to go on a two day one night trek...we got taken to a few places before the trek began, including a snake show- the commentating was the best! We were also taking to a place to meet the long neck tribe-it was all a bit uncomfortable...the children seemed a little sad, I guess the continuing flow of tourists taking photo's and staring is such an invasion.-We weren't there for long. We then started our walk! The first part was cool, we met a lovely couple called Becky and Dan, from England, so we were chatting to them most of the walk. After an hour and a half, we reached a beautiful waterfall, in which we all bathed and cooled down. The second part of the ... read more

1st May Our first outing in the Chiang Dao area was local to the Nest. A 500 meter walk took us to the start of a single track that would eventually lead us to the Tham Chiang Dao or the Chiang Dao Caves. The walk was hard work in the heat and humidity but was made harder by the narrowness and how much debris had fallen onto the track since the last storm. Air had supplied two bamboo walking sticks to aid us up and down to the caves. They were useful to clear the path ahead and to check that there were no beasties hiding! well there were, in particular a giant red centipede which can cause problems if bitten. We heard but didn't see some of the 300 species of birds in the forest, ... read more

3rd may A day of trekking and more caving but knarlier. We travelled up in the national park in a pick up with a mat of hessian i think, with two others Phillip and Johanne from Strasbourg. Forty minutes driving up to 800 metres in altitude and then a 2 km walk to the village to meet our guides. The village population is 100 and more dogs!, we were told to wait because i think our guide was working somewhere else ,he arrived very friendly and enthusiastic. In the middle of nowhere this felt unerving, however after an issue of caving helmets we all felt better, until we saw the gouges then we realised it could be a rocky trip. The walk was 40 mins through some burnt out areas before entering the teak forests on ... read more

From the north of Chiang Mae we took the Thathon bus to Chiang Dao which is about 80km and 1.5 hours on a very crowded local bus with no AC just fans that do'nt work. No westerners on board just us and seats for 3, only 2 on our one! 39C on the bus, phew, in the full sun once we arrived at the village of Chiang Dao it was 42C, nearly unbearable until a red taxi arrived to take us to The Nest which is 8km up towards the Dao national Park. Once at the village we got a sorng-taa-ou(yellow taxi)to the Chiang Dao Nest. The nest sits just outside the Doi Chang Dao National Park and next to one of Thailands biggest mountains Doi Chiang Dao which is 2195m. Our hut was made of ... read more
