Although most of the times I leave my village I am off to gallivant around some city with my Peace Corps friends but this time I was switching things up. Erica had made friends with a former Peace Corps Thailand fellow who she connected with because we share a mutual obsession with birds. When it turned out he was making a voyage out to Thailand we thought we would all try and meet up in Isan and do a bit of hiking.

Meeting him at the Udon airport, we picked up a fellow who somewhat resembled Santa Clause in both appearance and jolly spirits. From there we hopped into his rent a car and took off for Khon Kaen. After quite a bit of direction asking we finally made it to the area, however once in the area we were hopelessly lost. TO the point where we found ourselves down some random back road in the middle of nowhere talking to the Rambo of Isan. Lucky for us Rambo of Isan knew exactly where to send us, which brought us to a little Resort where we got our rooms and grabbed some dinner.

The next morning we started out early grabbing ourselves a roadside breakfast. Our destination was a national park that in theory was very close to our resort. Back and forth, back and forth, quick stop for directions, back and forth, back and forth, more directions and despite the fact that there really was only one road to drive on we couldn’t for the life of us find this place. Finally after pass number 10ish we passed the entrance to the park, how we had missed it so many times is beyond me but we had finally made it.

We parked our car and headed into the park to search for some trails. First we stopped off at the little nature centre to look at a few things. Then we proceeded on to the water we’re we spotted a beautiful Blue Iguana. He was gorgeous as he bopped up and down showing off his spectacular colors.

Searching for a path we found a little thing that may or may not have been a trail at all. None the less we followed it picking up a few more herp species along the way. The path lead us out to an opening just a few minutes from where the path started. Was that it? Apparently it was, so we went to the fellow at the front of the park and asked where to go.

He hopped in his own truck and we followed after him. Here at this second park we piled into his truck since our little car apparently wouldn’t be able to make it through the park. There wasn’t a whole lot to see. We checked out some cool geological structures that looked like massive mushrooms and went to a river and through a forest like area but that was essentially it.

We headed back to our resort to eat, drink and be merry. Our National Park experience left a bit to be desired, but it was a good bonding experience for the three of us and we overall enjoyed our experience together.
