Hola!. Finally im outta Bangkok and on the beach on a little island east of BKK called Ko Samet. It feels soo good to be out of the city. Everything is on island time- it takes forever to do anything cause its soo laid back. Althought Bangkok was fun. We went to a snake farm in BKK where they make anti-venoms for the World Health Organization. We watched as snake handelers played with fatal cobras, and we got to hold a 10 ft burmese python. Very fun indeed. But now im on the beach, drinking beer and swimming for hours. Boo hoo. hahaha. Tomorrow we are off to Ko Chang ( an island right near the border between Thailand and Camobodia). Hope all is well at home and take care. -Fraz ps. Vancouver beat Toronto!!!! Leafs ... read more

Well, this is my last full day in Thailand for this trip. I left Koh Samet this morning, took a ferry to the mainland and a minibus back to Bangkok. About 4 hours total to Bangkok. Tonight I am having dinner with Will. I am meeting her in about 30 minutes so this will be short. I will add my pics when I get back home. Took several nice shots of the Kai Saew, the beach where I stayed. The Kai Saew Villas were very nice, but a new place called Samed Villa looks good too. Back at the Asia Hotel again. This is my third time staying here. I have a 7:15 am flight tomorrow morning and I need to leave for the airport at 5 am. I am going to try to stay up ... read more

Firstly, Happy Birthday Annette. So, Kristy and I returned home from our 7 day dream-trip-excursion, both exstatic and exhausted. It was absolutely unreal. The sights of the beach were breathtaking and we (I) spent most of the trip pinching ourselves as it just seemed so much like a Corona commercial. Certainly not the reality I know. (OK....I know Corona pretty well, but not the whole beach scene). We arrived in Bangkok (still one of the funniest words I know) at around 2 am our time. The cab driver was out of control on some of the craziest streets I've ever witnessed. We probably looked pretty funny as we were pretty much huddled up in the back seat awaiting our instant death. We arrived at our destination street (Khao San road) which is apparently a Mecca for ... read more

I arrived this afternoon from Pattaya. This place is the antithesis of Pattaya. Beautiful beaches, soft white sand, and very peaceful. This is a place to relax. There are a limited number of bars and restaurants, not like the bar girl places in Pattaya at all. A Thai woman who worked at the Asia Hotel recommended this place to me. This is where she goes for vacation. I will only be here for 3 days. Then back to Bangkok for my flight home. I will take some pics tomorrow. Today I just unpacked and did a nice walk along the beach. Had a nice lunch near the beach. Very laid back. I won't be writing too much since internet access costs $1.50/hour compared to $0.50 in Chiang Mai and a $1.00 in Bangkok. I did find ... read more

Next day was more of the same, bandy recovering from his poorly stomach (and getting up at 7am to find his watch, to no avail). I've felt fine pretty much the whole time, had a sore throat in bangkok but that gave our kid a chance to oggle the attractive pharmasist in boots when I bought strepsils. Theres not a lot to do, swim, play guitar, banana pancakes, etc etc. Great weather, occasional showers, steady 28 degrees the whole time I reckon. Got a bit of a tan now, nothing serious, no burns like a usually do. Can see the white bits on my feet from my sandals nicely. I like that :) Ran into Tom the next night again and he''s been drinking since the afternoon and was well on the way to getting completely ... read more

next day we woke bright and early to take advantage of another day and another beach. We had ended up on one of the more remote beaches so getting to where the majority of the action was entailed a trek through the jungle. I kinda like ko samet, lots of thai tourists, enough bankpackers, not too rowdy, not too quiet. We had a boring day, swimming, listening to Jack Johnson (again!), eating banana pancakes, drinking shakes. We had a great afternoon jamming away on the guitars too, until some random thai woman opened our door and yelled "excuse me!" I think she didn't like the sweet music we were playing, Bandy thought she'd just got the wrong room. She looked pissed off to me! That night we went out in search of action, but there wasn't ... read more

next day we got up far too late to manage getting a flight back to bangkok. Not very organised you see, we were on the ferry just before it was going to leave and it ended up being full anyway. Bandy say feeling ill while I asked just about everyone on the ferry if they were drivig to bangkok and if we could pay for a lift so I could make it to the dentist for 5pm. No chance. We ended up taking a tourist bus to pattaya which was closer and had the possiblity of flying to bangkok. The bus took ages, and after Bandy threw up at the food stop we ended up jumping off at the pier to Ko Samet, another island which we both knew pretty well from before. 40 mins ferry ... read more

What can I say about Ko Samet? It's a small island just 200k from Bangkok and can be reached in 15 mins from the mainland, but it's so far removed from the hustle and bustle of mainland Thailand. Considering the journey down to Pattaya which I mentioned last time, the next leg to get here was relatively painless. We got a cab (which was a squeeze) to take us to Ban Phe pier and then hired a speedboat to take us across to the island. It's so simple here, the speedboad literally just backed up to the beach we wanted and we had to get off into the water and carry our bags ashore. Glad I had my sandals on! The beaches are fab, all dazzling white sand which is really unlike anywhere else I've been ... read more

Hell and Handbaskets We were planning to stay in Ko Samet for three days. On our third day Dow, one of the workers at our hotel, invited us to go see the island with him tomorrow. He said that we would rent a motorbike in the afternoon and drive to the most beautiful spots and stop at a wonderful vista to watch the sunset. I told him that I had never driven a motorbike before and he assured me that it would not be a problem. He said that I would have to be careful because I would have Emily on the back. Honestly, the prospect of driving a motorcycle for the first time, in a land where everything I ever learned about driving and the rules of the road was backwards with Em on the ... read more

Contrast Thailand seems to entertain a sort of dualism. On the one hand, it is a tropical paradise, teeming with exotic fruits, friendly people, and more beauty than one thought possible. On the other, it contains one of the world’s most populous cities, chalked full of smog, traffic jams, and scam artists. Despite being polar opposites, Thailand is both options. On our last journey Thailand was really only the first description. We stayed in the city only one night and were mesmerized by the newness of everything. We left early the next morning and never had a chance to acquaint ourselves with this metropolis. Instead we stayed on white sandy beaches with warm turquoise water and locals who had smiles permanently affixed to their faces. The only indication that there was another side to Thailand came ... read more
