West Side
West side of Ko Samet - perfect sunset destination After a couple of quiet days of Mark with food poisoning (or a really bad "Chang-Over") it was time to get back into the routine of things - by this time we had pretty much figured out where the best coffee in town is, and quite often it is nt in actual fact where the neon sign says "Best Coffee in Town". Our coffee shop was 'Jump' - beautifully air-conditioned & they had the best Bossa Mix, although I think most cafe's in Thailand seem to all have the same CD in their players.
Most of our time on Ko Samet was spent on the beach with a good book and our frisbee. We pretty much have the frisbee down-pat now. One of the many highlights on this small island is the one and only beach on the west side, Ao Phrao Beach. The locals would say that it is easily accessible by scooter, avoiding the potholes seemed to be a skill in itself. Ao Phrao Beach has 3 resorts on it but is open to everyone and not busy at all, we spent a fair amount of time enjoying a peaceful swim here. If you are clever enough the

Dining at red ginger - owned by a Canadian 'guest only' deck chairs do the trick.
We are starting to get the hang of the local laundromats - drop your 1kg (or in our case 2.6kg) at the internet cafe and collect it the following evening. At 50 Baht/kilo ($1.63 aus) we thought this was a steal, after a while we managed to get laundry down-pat and find a place for only $0.81/kilo.
After a week on the island we decided to venture to the mainland of Banphe, a 35-40 minute ferry ride. Whilst here we stocked up on reading material and enjoyed a great lunch at Christie's Cafe - who owns the book store as well and possibly half the town, great photo opp for Bree as her family name happens to be Christie. Tonight we had dinner at Red Ginger on Samet, owned by a Canadian. Great food, but a small menu. Mark had the spare ribs (if they were the spare ones I’d hate to see who ate the rest of them).
Half of our blog is about food, but we are not proud of this next bit. I had been craving Spaghetti Bolognese, so we ate dinner at the beach. We blew
Modern day Monk
Just before he pilfered $12 from us our whole daily budget on dinner. 1150 Baht! On dinner! This really hit home for us, so it was time to tighten up our act. We retreated back to our bungalow for a night in with a Karl Pilkington & Idiot Abroad episode on the iPhone.
It was during our stay at Baan-Pra-Kai-Kaew when we met an amazing family with 2 kids (13 & 15) –Michael, Ciska, Jesse & Sammy from Australia who have spent the past 4 ½ years travelling the world on their bicycles. Amazing stuff, considering some of the driving we have experienced in this country.
http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=1&doc_id=4438&v=6Ti We had booked our Samet stay up front, but really, weren’t able to leave until we received a package from Bree's Mum in Australia. The day before we were due to checkout, Tony handed Bree the package containing her YHA card and we were good to go as planned. We booked our ferry > mini bus > ferry to Ko Chang and off we went.
