Long day of travel

Well we left for the airport at 5:00am Christmas eve and finally arrived in Bangkok at 11:00pm Christmas day. Quite a long journey but it is now behind us. So we get to Bangkok just before the last Train leaves to the city. They didn't have this train the last time we were in Bangkok and I was eager to try it as a way to and from the airport. We made it to the train ok and it is nice and convenient. But what I didn't realize was that by the time we would get to downtown, the rest of our connecting metro options would already be closed down for the night. So, we ended up with a taxi anyway! But it was then a shorter taxi ride than it would have been and an interesting experience overall.

Bangkok is always fascinating. Part culture. Part chaos. Part dirty. Part naughty. It is all here! We spent the morning having breakfast on the river and then went to Wat Po and Wat Arun - two of the most famous temples here. We then went to explore the Mandarine Oriental hotel which was in that area. Steven wanted to see the building and we ended up having lunch here as well. After a morning of Buddist temples, we spent the afternoon at the "retail" temples. Steven wanted to get some shirts at MBK - which is the huge mall here, before heading to Siam Paragon which is another huge mall here. After giving alms to the retail gods, we went back to the hotel, cleaned up, and then headed to Bar Vertigo at the Banyan Tree. Steven read that it was rated the number 1 rooftop bar in Bangkok. Wow - amazing views from up there. We watched the sunset turn into a city night-scape. Very beautiful. We then headed back to the hotel to freshen up before going to the night market. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of laying down for "just a second" and the next thing you know, I'm out for the night. Jet lag claimed another victom!

Today, we are going to get breakfast and then pack before heading to Hong Kong. We've never been to Hong Kong and look forward to exploring the city.
