Hi All,
10 days in Bangkok so far whilst waiting for my new debit cards to arrive at the British Embassy. Hmmm, what to write... I guess I'd start by saying Bangkok isn't my favorite place. Too many hammered Western folk the likes of which is part of the reason why it was so nice to leave Britain in the first place.
It's incredibly modern for the most part, get the same old hassles from tuk tuk drivers and people touting rubbish. Replacing tiger balm and hashish sellers in Kathmandu, here you have people with stupid hats, wooden frogs and generally a lot of prostitutes.
Did the usual sightseeing of the Grand Palace and places nearby, took an Express boat down the river, taken the local buses to some of the shopping places as well. Saw Benjamin Button last night, wasn't the best film ever but passed the time in probably the comfiest cinema seats in the world (and we weren't even VIP!).
Hoping to escape this city soon and head up to Phitsanulok on the train and then take a bus to Sukhothai for a day before continuing on the train up north to Chiang Mai which
Bangkok
Shopping centres, dirty Westerners & Prostitutes. At least that's unfortunately that's the most part we saw on the streets. will hopefully be a lot more interesting to me at least!
Barry and me have had the dumps since arriving here after eating a maggot each, offered to us by a random guy (mistake i know) and following this with some 'street meat' from a hawker which was questionable tasting at the time! On the bright side, it is a mighty fine way to lost weight and then save money as you no longer want to eat!
Spent most of the days here sleeping, only emerging in the afternoon and then maybe drinking at one of the bars along the main street where we're staying or (more usually) at a van that's much cheaper and has loads of chairs every evening.
Sitting on the chairs outside the van is where I ended up having a 40 year old thai lady kiss me, was weird. The belief on my part is that it was her way of getting rid of a giant muscly guy who was harrassing her. Western people here seem to believe that EVERYONE is a hooker, or has a price. As I said, it's not my favourite place!
Weather here is about 35 degrees
and I only have one pair of shorts so getting pretty stinky now, but for some reason (genius I imagine), shorts cost about 18 quid a pair which is frankly outrageous compared to the 1 quid for a tshirt! I am therefore going to hold out and hope that it is just a capital city thing and that I'll find some cheaper elsewhere.
Ummmmm... that's about it really! Hopefully get my cards tomorrow and then manage to get out of the big city and back into a slightly more backpackery place. Planning on more trekking in Chiang Mai and going to a monastary to learn basic meditation so looking forward to that! Really looking forward to making it into Cambodia and then hitting the beaches hard with some world class lazing in the sun planned!
Hope everyone is well and looking forward to not getting any comments as usual, rah!
