Bangkok is all it's said to be. Bold and daunting from the minute you get off the plane, however we instantly felt more at ease and safer here than we did when arriving in San Jose. Perhaps we were lured into a false sense of security by the politeness and the thousands of greetings and smiles you recieve from the Thai people before you have even left the airport. One thing Bangkok knows well is its target audience... the backpackers. It has everything they could need, cheap accommodation in the heart of the city next to crazy nightlife, cheap markets and extremely cheap food and drink.
Our first meal there was a delicious Thai green curry and a local beer- Chang- which came in at a whopping £3 each in a nice restaurant. A beer here shouldnt cost you more than £1.20 in a bar. Any brand you have ever seen has been replicated (and well) at the markets here and you can pick up some lovely jewellery, clothes and gifts for very little.
We met up with the group we were going to be spending the next week with and instantly forgot about our jet lag and headed
off for our first night out on Khao San Road. We headed out to the lively Shamrock bar followed by the lady boy filled Gullivers club. We spent the next day enjoying a well needed full body massage for a measly £3 each.
On our second day we enjoyed a cruise along the Bangkok river although not much to see from this viewpoint (apart from feeding the mutant giant fish some bread). We may have relished those extra couple of hours in bed. However, the afternoon served us well with a trip to some of the temples including Wat Po and learning more about Buddhism.
That evening we headed to the outskirts of town to see a Ping Pong show. Now as people who know us well already know we are not prudes by any means but this was an eye opener. It started off mild, well the girls were shooting ping pongs from their hoohaas into little jars, then it went onto emptying coke bottles into hoohaas and refilling them and eventually smoking and pulling razor blades from their hoohaas (all things that would come as no suprise to anyone else who has discovered the splendid delights
of Sticky Vicky in Benidorm). What was to come as a sort of finale we did not expect and can only be described as a sex show on stage. Needless to say the whole group came away a little less innocent and laughing... a lot.
Our third day in Bangkok was spent at the Grand Palace with most of our group now well and truly hungover. But the temples there were beautiful. We had a competition to see who could buy the most ridiculous trousers and visited the famous reclining and emerald buddhas. All this before experiencing our first and unfortunately not our last tuk tuk ride through the streets of Bangkok.
That evening we packed our bags and headed for the train station where we boarded an overnight train to the south of Thailand. We were in second class which were fans only but they were more comfortable than expected. We were told to get top bunks as there would be less bugs however the bottom bunk was actually bigger and darker so if you dont mind bugs too much opt for the bottom as I think we will do next time.
