Hey everyone. So it has been an entire month that I have been in Thailand. I can't believe it, it seems that just a little bit ago I was longingly awaiting just to be accepted and now here I am!
Some days I wake up in the middle of the night due to the dogs barking or the roosters going crazy, I stretch out on my cot on the floor which is well as hard as the floor and think wow I'm really here. Then I wake up grab myself some instant coffee and eat some random meat that I have no idea what it is, hope on my bike with my awesome neon green helment and bike off to school. At any one of these periods I can think WTF am I doing here, but I don't. Instead I look around and see the beauty of the place.
My homestay family is simply amazing. I have a younger sister and brother, a sister in law and a 3 month old baby along with my parents. They are very VERY patient as I struggle to get out a simple sentence in Thai which probably didn't really make any sense
and really didn't matter because all I was going for was I like chicken.
I gotta say they feed me some rather interesting things though. After being a vegetarian for so long its a bit tricky to choke down some tongue with a smile on your face, but I do it. I recently explained in my limited Thai that I had been a vegetarian and that if I was to rank food veggies would be on top and octopus would be on the bottom. Thank you language class for finally teaching me these nessary words.
Although my folks are pretty cool they are a bit overprotective. So every day I head off to school with my two companions. Sporting our nifty neon helmets we head off on our bike ride. It really is a beautiful ride, passing rice field after rice fields that are filled with different bird species.
On Mondays all 66 of us get together for cultural lessons and medical lessons and Thai dancing lessons. I love Mondays because I love seeing everyone. Some days its just our langauge group or just our village group, both of which I love but I like seeing the
teaching crew come on through.
Every other day I have language lessons. I like to pretend I'm pretty good, but I'm not. In fact I kind of suck! But my groups cool and very patient. And every time I get stressed out something silly happens and I can't help but bust out laughing. In fact my ajaan says I'm practically Thai already because I smile ALL the time. I guess if I can't speak the language at least I can look the part? sorta?
So other than school I do get to do some fun stuff too! Two weeks ago we had Thai day which was really fun. We dressed up in our Pasins (sp?) and put on some preformances. It was nice to take a day and just laugh instead of cram my brain full of information. After which a group of us went to the soccer field to play a game, which was also great especially since my team naturally won.
Yesterday we had sports day! We played chair ball, dtrycaw, and bacci ball. All of which was a good time, especially the dtracaw which is like soccer/volleyball. There was also a cheering competition that
did not go over as well as the sports aspect for my team but was still fun.
Free days have been spent exploring the area. Last week my family took me to 8 different wats. Each one of them was more beautiful than the last. We also went to the Ayutthaya ruins which were rather beautiful as well.
Today we checked out how farmers grew the rice. The different machines that they used adn the techniques and how long and all that jazz. I was a bit more interested in all the different bird species that were flying around eating the rice or the different insects living in the fields.
Overall my time here has been truely awesome! It gets better and better and I can't believe I'm here. Hope all is well back home, and hopefully I'll get some picture posted soon!!!!
