I looked for a floating marked and was pleased to find something a little bit different from the floating market that I visited before: “floating kitchens”. Ladies pulled up on their boats by the steps on the sides of the brige and cook food, mainly seafood and there are little tables and little stools for customers to sit on and eat on the steps. A waitress takes the order and delivers it to the boat lady and brings the food from the boats to the people. The waitress also delivers the payment. Super interesting. I spend some time watching and trying to figure out how to photograph what was going on and capture the atmosphere properly without a wide wide angle. I forgot I had my gopro in the pocket and could have filmed the restaurant ... read more

I had to be out of the door by 0630 if I wanted to see the monks rolling into town. People exchange offerings like food, soap and basic needs for blessings. And if you are lucky besides blessings you will also get an amulet. A few monks leave their temples to collect food for the rest of the monks that stay in the temple. They walk around barefoot with shiny bowls for people to deposit their oferings on. Once the bowl is full they have to return. I saw 3 monks, they received the offerings, give the blessings and put the food behind a wall in a big bag and do it all over. This gave me the opportunity to take a few shots but I didn’t want to be too invasive and unrespectful in such ... read more

After I had some fruit I had a bit of energy to do a boat ride. There were different prices for the sight seeing boat rides. 50 THB for a regular sight seeing. It was 500 THB for 5 temples and 900THB for 9 temples. I didn’t feel like doing any temples at all. I just wanted to see the temple in the three. But I could ‘t ask anyone in English. I understood you have to go to the more expensive rides to see the temple in the tree. I wasn’t motivated enough and I decided to go for the basic sightseeing tour. I took the 50 THB one. I was surprised to find out that it stops at temples too. I stepped of the boat at the first 2 but after that I was ... read more

I was starving and since I know I have nothing to loose if I eat fruit I looked for a guava stand and I asked the lady to cut three for me and a couple of small bananas. She only sells them by the kilo so I paid for a kilo but I was happy so was my belly. I skyped the love of my life and I walked him through the harbor while I was taking documentary photos, I had the screen of my phone pointing out at the water so he could be there with me. I watched the vendors set up and come in by boat from their villages. Such a different life style for me that I couldn’t resist to take a lot of photographs.... read more

1. WONGWAIAN TRAIN STATION My new plan is to go somewhere each weekend, repeat or not, doesn’t matter but go somewhere. Pim, my instructor for the Basic Thai cooking skills class was trying to organize the group of students to do this trip but at the end of the day she was schedule for a pro class on Saturday and everyone else had something to do… so I decided to stick to the plans and do it on my own, “the local way”. The local way to amphawa is to do the train route to Maekhlong (where the railway market is, that I blogged about before) and from there take the bus to Amphawa and spend the night in town because of two reasons: Amphawa has a night time floating market and second, it has a ... read more

I walked along the waterfront and started seeing guesthouses. I walked towards one and a lady boarded me. She said all busy and all expensive 1200-1500 THB that she would take me somewhere cheaper by the bus station. She took me to an old house with two rooms and the shower and toiled outside of the room shared. She said “cheap -cheap 600 THB”. Its Saturday its busy and you are not going to find anything else. The room looked clean. No AC. With a fan, it just had a bed. I didn’t want to settle for the first place and wanted to see at least another one. But she said that she would not keep the place if I go see the glowworms and come back later. So I said all right at least that ... read more

Hi all, Well again I am well behind in my blogs, but suppose that means we are doing the right thing by relaxing... Below are lots of photos taken from when Mia and I spent the day (Sunday 24th March) with Bangkok Food Tours and their 'offbeat floating market' tour. A great and long day out visiting the famous train market and 3 floating markets. The train market is set up along the railway and 8 times a day a train passes through. Each time it does the vendors have to pull aside the food and pull down their shade screens so that the train can pass. As soon as it has passed each stall, the vendor pops the shade screen back up and the produce is slid back into place. It's quite funny to watch! ... read more

Scotty I don’t know if this is cheating but we looked through the tour book in our room and seen some things we really wanted to see. The tours were really cheap considering it was a full day and most of the night (650 BHT/£13 each). We looked online to see if there was other cheaper, more daring ways to get there, and it turns out there wasn’t. So we booked our trip in the morning and left in the afternoon with a dozen or so other tourists, ranging from Chinese, Japanese and Americans. Everyone was fairly young though, so I blended in with them all It took about an hour and a half to get to the first destination which was something I had seen a long time ago and always ... read more

Amphawa It had been quite some time since I woke up at 6am in the morning. We were supposed to be giving alms to the monks, who will be rowing down the river. It was a beautiful and peaceful morning. However, the 2 of us were too sleepy to notice much. I just merely let my fingers do the clicking. As it was a Monday morning, Amphawa felt very much like a dead town. No shops or anything was open. They were mainly for the locals and they are only open from Friday - Sunday afternoons. For those who like the crowds, you might want to check out the other floating markets such as Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, Taling Chan Floating Market, Tha Kha Floating Market etc... There are several other homestay around Amphawa as well. ... read more

I seriously think it is terrible to travel with workaholics - as they would always be too exhausted from their work to have any energy left for other forms of travelling, shopping or fun. Needless to say, the both of us slept through breakfast (missing out on our 1st hotel breakfast). By the time, we finally got ourselves out of the hotel, it was close to noon. Ha. So much for coming to the shopping paradise. Lucky for me, my friend is just as nau as I am (which means lazy-bummer in hokkien). Pantip Plaza & Platinum Plaza We decided to head over to A&W at Pantip Plaza to have our brunch. As I enjoy playing with gadgets and enjoy techie stuffs, my friend allowed me to go and check out what they have at Pantip ... read more
