We arrived home late last night, after 26 hours of travelling. Yep, it is still far. You know you are tired, when you almost fall asleep as you are walking the airport corridors. Today is a quiet Sunday. With great internet, I decided to post another blog of last week's activities. Lots of pics with the speedy upload. We spent last weekend in Dushanbe, the capital. Reading a brochure on things to do, we read about a 'Minatures' museum of Persian miniature art, that appeared to be very close to where we are staying. After a couple of attempts to find it on our own, we ask someone, who quickly has about 5 other people trying to help us. One of them offers to escort us, and after about 3 phone calls to the artist (what ... read more

Day 81 Friday 8th April 2016 – Dushanbe to Penjikent Moving day and we have nothing booked so asked reception for some advice on getting to the city of Penjikent. The hotel has its own driver who could take us to the shared taxi rank and negotiate our fare, we paid him more than a normal taxi but he sure did earn his money. All the shared taxis leave from an area called the “cement factory” (because it is next to one) and it is located about 15 minutes from the centre of town. As soon as we stopped the car we were besieged by dozens of men trying to get our fare. The driver indicated for us to stay in the car as he battled, fought and screamed at them all, before calling ... read more

Day 76 Sunday 3rd April 2016 – Osh to Khujand (Tajikistan) Both excited and anxious about moving to another country today, the transferring should be easy it is what lies ahead that has us slightly worried. Tajikistan wasn’t initially on our plan but when we discovered it was safe and easy to do we slotted it in. Our plan had us travelling down the Pamir Highway and Wakhan Valley but stupid me didn’t pay full attention to the fine print regarding weather. We shifted our departure date a few times and as Tajik wasn’t the priority I lost sight of the significance that the Pamir is really only accessible from July to September. If it is a good spring you can do it in May but at the moment the latest word we have ... read more

Onward to Dushanbe, and again it's going to be a shared taxi for the 13+ hour trip. Luckily there were two Swiss girls in the same homestay who were also going, one of them had been in Tajikistan for three months on an internship so her host family were able to arrange a driver to pick us up and by paying for an extra seat we were able to avoid some of the regular joys of travel here. Strangely by avoiding the normal negotiating, waiting, detours, and overcrowding it felt like we'd cheated a bit – we need to have some strong words with ourselves !!! Dushanbe is a bit of an odd place that seems to be trying to ignore the rest of the country and reality. It has wide tree lined boulevards, big new ... read more

So, part of our assignment is to also do a couple of presentations on Taikistan when we return home. I am hoping the blog will help fulfill this for me. :) We are now in the Capital of Tajikistan. It is a very beautiful city, clean with quite a few parks throughout. Many of the buildings have been restored. I am just going to post pics from today's walk. And a few from the market at Kurgon Teppa (the town where our assignment is based).... read more

We're nearly there! We left Khorog early and planned on a quick stop off in the Jizeu valley before making more progress towards the final destination, Qurgonteppa. The roads were good so we got to the Jizeu bridge at midday. It's just "the bridge" because the actual village is a 2 hour hike up the valley. We walked along the crystal clear water until we got to the most surreal village I've ever seen. It was like walking into the Shire from Lord of the Rings. Everything was so lush and green with bright blue ponds/lakes dotted about and white peaks on the horizon. With 14 houses making up the whole village, I can understand the confused looks we were getting as we walked through. We were offered tea in a few of the houses but ... read more

The journey from Osh, Kyrgyzstan to Khorog, Tajikistan along the Pamir Highway and Wakhan Corridor is slow, high altitude, bumpy, and dusty. The homestays along the way are basic with long drop outside toilets, limited electricity, and no internet. It's been 6 of the best travel days of our life. We've loved the jaw droppingly spectacular landscape, the wonderful people, and the oddness of for days being literally just a few metres away from Afghanistan - a fantastic, exhilarating experience that we will remember and re-live for a long time to come. Pictures will do a better job than words but choosing just a few from the hundreds we took was too difficult a task so with this post there are more than normal.... read more

This blog comes in three parts ... Khorog to Yamchun We woke up in Khorog planning to set off after giving the car a service. It ended up taking longer than expected to tinker with the car so we left around midday. The drive was amazing, the roads were surprisingly good too. We managed to make good progress until we turned a corner only to find a lorry on it's side blocking the whole road. We were thinking of what to do because if we couldn't pass the only option was to wait for the lorry to be moved (could take days) or turn back. When we arrived a big 4x4 was struggling to drive up a verge onto the neighbouring farmers field in an attempt to drive round the lorry. Our chances of getting up ... read more

Wow! It has been almost a week, and I still can’t get my head around the fact that we are in Tajikistan!! We are on another US Aid ACDI project and loving it! It is fascinating. Ed’s project is orchard management which is quickly becoming much easier than my record keeping project. We are here until Sept 5th, so a very short time to try to get up to speed on the needs of the groups we are working with. Ed & I are working together as the groups are far apart and require a translator. It has been a very long time since we have been in a situation where there is really no English. The schools are beginning to teach the younger students some English, but Tajik is the national language and Russian is ... read more
