In my last TravelBlog article, about two years ago, I talked about how my family moved from Taiwan (where I'd been living for 10+ years, married a Taiwanese, and had two kids) back to my hometown in Canada just before COVID started. I mentioned how COVID had killed my Taiwan travel business, but there was hope in the horizon that things were improving. Well, I'm happy to report that things have improved A LOT since then! After being totally closed to tourists for 2.5 years, Taiwan finally reopened its doors to tourists again at the end of 2022. My Taiwan-focused website recovered very quickly. In 2023, I started a second Taiwan website called TaiwanObsessed, which is also doing very well now. We actually visited Taiwan when COVID was still raging there and tourists weren't allowed in ... read more

V buse sme tri osoby, do finalnej destinacie prichadzam len ja. Cesta opat perfektna, same kopce, hmla, vyhlady.

Had another good breakfast at the bnb, can't say as much about the quality of the sleep though....my goodness that bed was hard ! Loaded up the car and before we left Lukang, went to have a look to see if there was anything going on in the old street....well it was buzzing. The town had come alive!! Again lots of stalls selling various foods, not sure if I've mentioned stinky tofu....well it is rank....but they seem very keen on it. David got excited by the hand made knife stand and bought something sharp to go in the luggage and I bought a few bits that might appear in a dem ! Next stop Alishan National Scenic Area. At it's highest 2600 mts. The express road to the area was easy and fairly quiet but as ... read more

If you are brave enough to tangle with the lack of English at the train station in Taichung, you can grab a train to Chacheng, the last stop on the Jiji branch railway. You get to travel through amazing mountain scenery and then you find yourself immersed in the history of the lumber and coal industries, with views of the Mingtan Dam (which is within walking distance). I admit that the history didn't mean as much as the lovely people and their dogs and cats (yes, cats) that I met on the train. The fact we didn't share a language meant nothing as I showed them photos of my dog while cuddling theirs. Smiles and laughter broke down minor barriers such as the language difficulties! And then there was the shopping. There are plenty of tiny ... read more

The weather was not so great, let say rather cloudy and rainy. Still I went to Sun Moon Lake. I guess it has its own charm with the mist. And it made up for some great views. I went up to the pagoda just on time to see it. The building actually disappeared in the mist before my eyes! It took less than 10min to be completely swallowed by the clouds. It was pretty cool. The walk down was a bit hazardous. They paved the path with some sort of smooth stones that are deadly slippery once wet. But I survived. The main highlight of the lake was the Xuanzang temple. They have the relics of Tripitaka master Xuan Zang. Ok it was mainly cool because I saw a show in NYC named 'Journey to the ... read more

Had a beautiful ride today taking a scenic route(called the Green tunnel)through rolling hills along the Jiji small rail line and then finishing with 15km or so of climbing :p. We found a really nice B&B right next to the visitor info. Centre and decided to stay a couple of days but had to cut it down to 1 day as things were all booked up for a fireworks festival.... read more

Monday, 16th May 2001 So there we were, after 2 nights at the comfort of HQ's house in Taichung, we were ready to embark on the next chapter of our > trip. The next 5 nights would see us off to southern Taiwan where Kaohsiung, Tainan and Kenting are located. En-route, we would be stopping by at the historical town of Heng Chun where the popular movie, Cape No. 7 was filmed. Since none of us had travelled this far out, we were certainly looking forward to the new travel experiences. Our driver picked us up from Taichung at 8.30am today. From there, it was a rough 2-hour drive up the winding road towards Mount He Huan. Located at more than 3,000m above sea level, it was bitterly cold and windy by the time we reached ... read more

Sunday, 15th May 2011 After a delicious 烧饼 breakfast at 台中美 this morning, we headed straight to the High Speed Rail Station to purchase our combo tickets to Sun Moon Lake. For NT599 (SGD25.70), the bundle came with a return bus ticket to Taichung, 1 boat ride to Itasho, 1 round-trip pass on the cable car system and unlimited rides on the round-the-lake shuttle buses. There were other ticket combinations on sale at the tour desk. We just wanted a no-frills package that covered the bare essentials of the lake. My last visit to Sun Moon Lake was some 6 years back. I recalled having to board a bus to Puli from the chaotic Taichung Railway Station and transfered to another bus to bring me to the lake. There were no combo tickets available. And of ... read more

Our first stop was the noodle place. Hsien took us there in his car that was parked at the university behind his place. It sort of reminded me of Sewanee – a big, beautiful campus in the middle of nowhere. He dropped us off and we ordered one bowl of Pho Bo for 60 NT. It was super good. Then we bought tea at the shop nearby and waited for the bus to take us to the lake. A fancier bus took us there and it was a really quick ride. Once there we rented electric bikes. The electric and normal bikes were the same price, so we went ahead with electric. Unfortunately, they weren't the kind that sort of motor you along – you have to keep pedaling. We asked for one hour and I ... read more

This morning we packed, left our bags downstairs, and caught the 10:25 bus to Cingjing. We made one 10-minute stop a little after 11 and after that we started seeing hotels and businesses. We asked the bus driver about Cingjing farm/Green Green Grassland, and he let us know when we were there, about 30 minutes after our earlier stop. We bought our tickets for Green Green Grassland and along with it came some coupons we couldn't read. I think this place would have been nice to visit on some other day. Today was foggy and rainy and cold. We couldn’t see very far and the sheep weren’t grazing. There were some pens where the sheep were kept and they have shearing shows twice a day, but we weren’t near those hours. You can buy all sorts ... read more
