TIME CHECK: 0615 Sadly the start of our last full day in Sri Lanka (on this trip). Just getting into the swing of things and we are already packing our bags for tomorrow's 4.5 hour flight to Dubai....."cheekily" we have booked 3 nights there so as to get used to the time zone......
BUG DEATH STRIKES WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT! After a massive lunch yesterday on the beach, we decide that a light repast would be sensible....we pile into a Japanese style establishment and settle into the bamboo chairs and rather minimalistic decor. Cathy looks frustrated and nervous. I have seen her tuck into Niger River smoked fish purchased from local tribesmen in Mali...."looking like rancid catomeat" ...without flinching. However, previous encounters with food from the "Land of The Rising Sun" ( Christchurch - Park Royal Hotel - 1994) evoked the same behaviour....NERVOUS AGITATION! Eventually, she settles on a prawn/potato croquette contraption (with a side of Tartar Sauce).......h'mmm really Japanese me thinks as I nibble on raw Wasabi Beef steeped in ginger. Shortly after her dish is delivered, a lone but fanatical Kamikaze Blow Fly appears on the horizon. It makes several low level passes at the croquette and
picks the perfect landing spot......at about the same time, the head water spots a general commotion from our table and comes over. The blow fly has by now, put on it's "white bandana" (with rising sun logo and goggles) but being distracted by the waiter, misjudges the aircraft carrier shaped croquette target below and dives headfirst into the tartar sauce.....bzzzzzzzzzrrrrr.......SPLOOOP! A final half hearted flap of it's left wing and it is indistinguishable from the little surrounding capers! The waiter whisks the offending dish away and returns with a fresh supply.......I somehow suspect that the deft use of a teaspoon was the order of the day.
UPDATE: We are now in NEGOMBO! A quaint fishing village - NOT - according to our driver/guide.... Well eerr quaint it ain't and the only fishing relates to any possible credit card skimming scams in the local pizza restaurants. HANG ON....that's not fair chaps.......it is a half decent holding pen resort for Europeans taking flights home the next day from Columbo Airport which is only 30 mins down the road. The Jet-wings Blue Hotel is a Tenerife stylee 3.5 star facility. One foot in the star above and one foot in 1979 Torremilinos - Timothy
Whites sun tan cream - flabby tattoo brigade - round the pool pints of Stella and lets gets off round the handbags (on Metaxa ) --- do do agadoooo do doooo! establishment.
Tomorrow it's an early 0530 get up for a 700hrs pick up by Lala (by the way he is still wearing the frog green shirt and disco trousers) and transfer to Columbo Airport. Our Emirates 777-300 ER flight to Dubai takes 4.5 hours. We need to smarten up for the Vegas of the Arab World.......
