Up early, I went for a run and got a bit lost in the dead end one way street system which meant a supposed 6km became 8 so arrived back pretty tired and flustered. We'd ordered fish curry for breakfast which after a big meal of curry the night before no one really felt like. Anyway couldn't be changed but, frankly, it was a fabulous breakfast. Decided to have a look at the market so got a couple of tuktuks and had a wander around. Went to few more pharmacies on our quest to get replacement drugs for Donna and some antibiotics. All to no avail, it appears the specific drug required is not available in SL. Plenty of alternatives on offer though. Made our way to Barefoot shop which came highly recommended and had a garden ... read more

Well after a really hectic couple of weeks we were finally on our way for another adventure with travel buddies, Chris (or Crice as he is know in Nepal) and Donna. Drive to the airport and checkin departure etc uneventful and by midnight we're safely belted into our seats and off to Singapore. Skipped dinner. Eleven, somewhat uncomfortable, hours with a reasonable sleep for me and practically none for dear Marie and we arrive for a short stopover. During the flight both I and Chris showed signs of nose/throat infections so that started a couple of days of us harassing pharmacists for drugs without the requisite prescriptions(more developments to come). Alas no antibiotics available at Changi but Chris did get some nasal spray, albeit so expensive he's going to keep it in room safes for the ... read more

From Bukit Lawang we went to the airport of Sumatra and took a flight to Jakarta. We just came out of the airport when we see the Ibis shuttle bus slipping away. And believe me we waited to hours in the dark for the next one. Finally it arrived and we had a good sleep. Next day we flew to the awesome Singapore airport and there was a connection tree IMAGES where you could play video games against people who were at the tree. Then we flew to Colombo ( Sri Lanka ) and waited another hour for our taxi to arrive and collect us at 2 o'clock in the morning! We didn't do much in the hotel apart from playing in the pool. Next day we took the train to the city which was -hundreds ... read more

I had asked many other tourists about Colombo and it seemed like nobody had anything nice to say about the capital of Sri Lanka. Everything we had heard was negative. People had told us that traffic was insane, that the city was noisy and polluted. We had also heard that it could be dangerous… My parents were even wondering whether it was worth stopping there. I was curious about the city, and I could not visit Sri Lanka without spending at least a day in the capital. So we kept it for the end of our trip, so that we would already have our Sri Lankan feet, that is to say we’d hope to be more familiar with the traffic, the local customs, the price of things… Well, it turns out that Colombo is a much ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling north-west from Mirissa to Colombo. We woke early at 5:30am and caught up on our travel writing before heading down to breakfast. The food was good – the hotel staff must have noted our absence at meals. I had an egg roti, freshly cooked omelette, freshly squeezed juice and tea. After breakfast we organised our packs, checked out of Hotel Silan Mo, jumped into the minibus and hit the express highway for Colombo. We entered the outer suburbs (or “outer skirts” as our guide suggested) of Colombo about 11:30pm, and after spending 30 minutes in heavily congested traffic we arrived at the Independence Memorial Hall. We loved the calm atmosphere of this open air monument to Sri Lanka’s independence the first time we visited Colombo two weeks ago, and the ... read more

HE SAID... After a comfortable flight from Singapore (just under four hours), we touched down at Bandaranaike International Airport at midnight. The airport is in Katunayake, which is 40 kilometres from Colombo. We had a reasonably quick transition through customs, although standing in a slow moving queue to get our passports checked and stamped was a little tedious in the humid midnight air. We made our way out of customs, found our pre-arranged transfer vehicle and sped off towards Colombo, arriving at our hotel (Taru Villas Lake Lodge) around 1:15am. A very tired hotel manager was waiting up for us, and after some preliminary paper work, he showed us to our room. The place was amazing, with heaps of room. We dropped our packs, showered and crashed at 2:30am. After just four hours’ sleep, we woke ... read more

Our last day in Sri Lanka. We packed and lazed around Aditya Resort as we were going to be collected from the hotel at 2.30 pm. This seemed a silly time to go because our flight to Hong Kong was not scheduled until after midnight. Of course the airport construction project was still causing a balagan with checkin queues etc, so we agreed with Jagath's suggestion. At 2.30 pm we said goodbye to the beautiful hotel and to the amazing staff. I said to the manager that, apart from the bookkeeper/accountant we hadn’t seen any women workers in the hotel. All of the cleaners, waiters and gardeners were men. We were told that women could work but that they didn’t want to go home by themselves late at night. Basil, our original driver told us that ... read more

Today we had a really lazy start. We were packing up as Don and I were going to Galle and Caroline was going back home to Manchester. Her flight was scheduled for the late evening. Jagath was paranoid about getting her to the airport early. For some reason best known only to the government, the airport was closed all during the day time (and this was the height of the tourist season) for alterations and only open overnight when all the flights and checkin activities were crowded together. We lazed around the hotel finishing the Boggle competition and chatting. Today was the only day we had any serious political conversation. I am pleased to say that we are all mature enough (at last) to appreciate the others' views. Caroline won the Boggle tournament. In fact her ... read more

The day started at 7:30 am with a 3+hour jeep ride around Colombo. The hotel had packed us a breakfast to eat somewhere along the way. Nishantha Abeysekara, the owner of 'Colombo by Jeep' collected us at the hotel with one of the earliest versions of the British jeep which was built in 1948. He was particularly proud of his Land Rover series 1, and his fleet contains other similar jeep vehicles. The jeep was “wired” (like the way car thieves steal cars) and started by way of the wire and a key and a starter button. There were no indicators and Nishantha relied on hand signals! Also the wing mirrors were unusable because the windscreen was lowered flat onto the bonnet. Jagath joined us in our jeep. A second jeep carried another family and ... read more
