I had to go to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city on Thursday. My tourist visa was nearing the end so I had to go to the Department of Immigration for it renewing. Another ex-pat, Danny, who lives in Hikka too, also had to re-new his so we went together. I met Danny outside Neela’s at 7am and we got the bus to Colombo. It takes about 2.5-3 hours (no timetables here, they just turn up when the please, but then I suppose that isn’t so different form the UK!). You can get two types of buses up to Colombo, The A/C bus or the Express. Danny and I just decided to get the first that arrived. Big mistake!! The A/C bus is pleasant and small and relaxed. The Express is like being on a rollercoaster and ... read more

Well I know it’s been longer than a week since my last update, but I’m so busy with work and exploring I’ve not got round to it!! Here it is though!! I’m learning more and more about the Singhalese people. They are so different to English people! They seem so relaxed about everything, it’s very much a Manana culture - I suppose it has to be in hot countries, or are the Brits just uptight??!! People hardly seem to do any work - and that’s the ones that do have jobs!! When you walk down the street or pass the shops on the bus, people just seem to be sat around on their doorsteps having a good old chin wag!! You can be waiting in the bank for an hour as the person in front is ... read more

Well my first week in Sri Lanka has been great!! its a great place! got here no problems with no delays (which apparently is very rare when traveling to Sri Lanka, so i was very lucky!) I met a random Indian man on the plane, he got on at Male where the plane had stopped to refuel and to drop all the honeymooners off! his name was Siddhartha and he said he was an investment banker. After about a forty minute flight from the Maldives to Sri Lanka he had offered to buy me flights to various places, including the Maldives, Goa and Banglor. He also offered to get a driver to collect me from the airport, hotels and apartments, and to buy me new clothes (all free of charge!!) i was glad to get of ... read more

We decided to travel along the coast from Negombo-Colombo-Kelaniya and then reaching all the way down Southern tip of Sri Lanka. As soon as we left Kelaniya, we realised that it is not as easy as we thought to drive along the high road. There were too many vehicles on the road and a few of them are following the rules of the traffic book. So we drove inland while visiting so many locally famous places from tea shops to local religious places. It was a wonderful experience for us as we passed acres of paddy fields and rubber plantations. As the darkness reaches early with a sign of rain over Southern tip of Sri Lanka, We decided to take a break from constant driving. ... read more

Hello from Sri Lanka! Local news... Well I arrived on the afternoon of Sunday 3rd to discover that there had been a bomb blast just an hour before at the main Colombo train station killing 10 and injuring 100, as well as a smaller blast at a zoo in Colombo that day. That followed a bomb on a local bus in Dambulla on Saturday 2nd that I read about just before I left home, and an incident near Yala National Park in late January (all places I am meant to be visiting!). There was a further bomb on Monday 4th in the north-east. It seems it was particularly intense last weekend because Monday 4th was Independence Day, marking 60 years independent of British rule, which was marked by a big public celebration. I have just got ... read more

Hey...hello again! Just checking the last time I wrote so I knew where I left off. I was in Hapitale last time I wrote. It's a beautiful place up there....scenery like you wouldn't believe and tea as far as the eye can see! That is when it's not raining!! Luckily the day after I wrote, teh skies cleared and it was a different place! I think when I wrote the last entry, you couldn't see 10 ft infront of you, but when the sun came out and you could see where you were, it was amazing. I've put some photos on face book so you can see what I mean. I guess the only down side is you really noticed the tension with the LTTE there. There were police and army checkpoints everywhere - they even ... read more

So ya, since new years I've not really done anything to exciting. Well, I just mean the routine has been the same for the last month now. Shortly after new years I went to the south coast of sri-lanka visiting the villages of Midigama, Weligama and Mirrissa on a 10day trip with a crew of us. Then soon after returning to Hikkadewa I relocated to Midigama where I stayed for the final two weeks of January. All i've been doing is wakin up early, gettin myself into the seemingly cold water as the sun comes up, exhausting myself for three hours, breakfast, lie in my hammok until late afternoon and then go back in the water for another three hours before dinner. Some would say it sounds a little boring just sittin in a hammock all ... read more

The last most of you had heard from me was that I was planning on staying in Hikkadewa for xmas and new years. However, after bein on the beach for a week I got restless and a few of us decided that we'd head inland for xmas instead and have an adventurous one rather then a beachstyle xmas. So the italians left before me to kandy while I waited around till my 45$ custom made board bag was being finished and I was lucky enough to witness the craziest parade I'd ever imagined(it completely out-did the indian style parade I saw in pushkar for the camel fair... completely). To lead the parade there were about 15-20 boys(10-20years old) swinging these 5m long braided ropes in circles around there heads to clear space, then they'd stop and ... read more
