Pleasing to report that this time the brochures did not lead us up the dusty bumpy path in search of a pipe dream, and there are, in fact, a heap of elephants in Udawalawe National Park. First item on the agenda today was a cooking class, which actually consisted of us sitting and watching Geoff cook. They clearly read my brief! But he did a great job of curried dhal, which we then enjoyed for breakfast. The call of the airconditionined car had us almost breaking into a sprint from the tent, and we all looked as though we’d run a marathon by the time we got there! Drove like maniacs to the Elephant Transit Home where they take abandoned young to raise before putting them back in to the park. The babies live in the ... read more

Beautiful morning dawned, warm and sunny. Breakfast and a leisurely couple of hours in the swimming pool and reading before Safari at 1:30. We struck lucky as we were the only two on our jeep (Nikolai Safari organised by Athgira River Camp so we had the driver (who was also our guide) to ourselves. The park is fantastic, the only 'big' game are the elephants but we saw so many other animals and loads of birds - it was a truly memorable afternoon. Lots of crocodiles, water buffalo, jackals and even a mongoose plus several herds of elephants, one group more than 20 including several babies, it was a privilege to see. The bird life was perhaps even more amazing with all kinds of water based species such as cranes, ibis and herons. Three different types ... read more

Today, because it was so special, I've included a large number of photos. Hopefully everyone will enjoy them and feel some of the joy we felt being able to do this safari her in Sri Lanka. Udawalawae National Park was originally created to provide a habitat for animals that were displaced when the Walawae River was dammed. It was created in the early 1970's and is about 300sq km in area. It is a very important habitat for both water birds and Sri Lankan elephants. In addition to the park there is an elephant transit facility for the rehabilitation of orphaned baby elephants to ultimately release them back into their natural habitat. The baby/young elephants are raised here for five years then returned to the park where they are, presumably, accepted into the herd (to be ... read more

I think some people have a different interpretation of the sounds of the jungle than me and think that the incessant chattering isn't the sound of animals but their own yabbering gobs. The jeep's engine is turned off, the animals are doing their shizzle and....blah blah #$¥€#%# blah.....SHUT UP!!! Thankfully this didn't happen much this morning but, as you may be able to tell, it did happen. Most of the time we were on our own enjoying the incredible scenery and amazing wildlife. We'd had a lie in until 4:45 so we were raring to go when our jeep and driver turned up at 5:30, especially as our hotel manager had got up early to make us hot drinks. The journey to the Udawalawa (sounds like a cue for a King Kurt song to me) National ... read more

Given that we were chased by an elephant back in Kaudulla, I was a bit dubious at first when I realised we were surrounded by a small herd of them in Uda Walawe. But our latest jeep man seem unconcerned as did the elephants. Udawalawe National Park is one of the main parks in Sri Lanka and around 10kms from where we were staying. Today's jeep is the best one yet giving Glyn leg room for once, a roof and my feet didn't touch the floor. As always we had the back of the vehicle to ourselves. The early morning drive took us past the reservoir with the sunrise reflecting nicely upon it. Wire fences run along the edge of the road to apparently stop the elephants wandering into traffic, but they still come right up to ... read more

No sleep in today as Marie, Chris and I are off to conquer Little Adams Peak. Taking Marie a good idea as insurance against another navigational issue. Set off at 6.30am and sun just rising but the valley full of cloud. We're above the cloud and can look straight across it to LAP, a spectacular view. The walk takes us down the hill to town then up the other side on the road before it branches off on a small track. Easy to see how McVet got lost yesterday as signage is pretty minimal and for some strange reason largely orientated away from the direction you are going?! The "climb" (sounds better than "walk") finishes with a few flights of stairs to ensure we all arrive suitable puffed. The view from the top was spectacular, 360deg ... read more

Crikey, day 10 already! Must be time to move on too as we've been in this place for THREE whole nights. The people have been lovely but the bathroom doesn't drain properly so you have more sand in your feet when you come out than when you went in. Also the fan is crap and nights have been very hot-during another power cut last night the room would have baked bread. But the breakfasts were good and plentiful and included in the bargain price of just over £6 per night. No haggling, no pretending to know English, just £6 a night. The other day our tuk tuk driver had introduced us to his son who had a tuk tuk too. Quelle surprise! He had offered to take us to Uda Walawe for 5000lkr in under 2 ... read more

I always thought that tuk-tuks were for short journeys only but in Sri Lanka we found a guy that insisted he could take us from Mirissa to Udawalawe almost as fast as a car. Could it be done... I’d had an idea to get up before sunrise to take long exposure shots of the sea over the rocks but Glyn convinced me that there weren’t any decent view points we could get to. To be honest it was nice not to get up in the dark and lie in until 7.15am. But was it an opportunity missed? I will never know. Breakfast was fried egg, toast, noodles, dahl, coconut sambal and bananas and whilst we were eating our tuk-tuk turned up 40 minutes early, the guy was making sure he wasn’t losing this fare! We said ... read more

When I was waiting at a bus stop in Ella, a man approached me and offered me a ride to my next destination. At first he offered it to me for 2000 rupees, then when I refused he went away. He came back about a minute later, and offered it to me for 1500. Nope. The bus was approaching and then he offered it to me for 1000 rupees. Rain was brewing as I looked up. Would have cost way less to take the bus but it would have been three bus transfers in potentially crappy weather. Plus 1000 for a 110 km ride in a car was a steal. Turned out this driver had brought two travelers up to Ella and was heading back and wanted to make some kind of coin, regardless of how ... read more

Uda Walawe National Park - what a little gem!! We were determined to do a safari during our time in Sri Lanka and we chose this national park out of all the options because we had heard it was the most similar to its African counterparts. We were not disappointed! There a couple of options to arrange a safari at this national park. Firstly, you can arrange accommodation in one of the surrounding camps that surround the park. There is no accommodation in the park itself but there are plenty of options in the vicinity of the park. They are quite expensive, I could not find a budget option during my search so I think you have to throw a bit of cash at this. The camps will have their own safari vehicles and will take ... read more
