Geo: 8.45732, 80.5438Habarana,Kandy and on to Ella in the Hill country 9th - 15thOctoberWe left Mr Abi in Habarana with great reluctance, we have never been taken care of so well. Sarat, the neighbour agreed to drive us to Kandy and stop and see sights on the way.The first stop was at Dambulla Cave Temples, 5 temples in 5 caves. They were interesting, especially the reclining Buddhas and the wall and ceiling paintings. As at all the temples, as soon as you enter their grounds you have to take off your shoes and walk barefooted. This canbe a real trial either because the ground is burning hot and it is very painful, or the ground is gritty, or as on our last temple visit of the day when there had just been a heavy downpour, it ... read more

Elephant Safari: A most unforgettable adventure for us--definitely one of our top experiences this trip. "The Gathering" of elephants that happens here toward the end of the dry season each year (August-September) is listed as 6th in the top wildlife experiences in the world. (Lonely Planet?) Our guide, with 8 years experience, was very helpful. He spotted many things we wouldn't have seen, including the larger native squirrel up a tree, a mongoose skimming across an opening, a monitor, a native hornets nest (big guys flying around it--2 cm long)... Our guide also explained how to tell a male elephant from a female one at a distance. The female has a boxy shape, with a flat back. The male has a rounded (convex) shape to his back. (I hope I got that right. No one would ... read more

Geo: 8.039, 80.7502On theroad again – Sri Lanka 30th Sept - 9th Oct2013We didn't start out to come here, we were on our way to Costa Rica, it is lucky chance that brought us here but we are so happy it did as we love Sri Lanka, so the early name of the Island, Serendip, is most appropriateAfter a pproximately 6 weeks in England for the usual “MOT” of doctor, dentist, optician etc and the much more enjoyable experience of meeting up with friends and family, we are travelling again. We are especially grateful to Paul and Angela who once again let us rest in their beautiful barn, which is the closest thing to a home we have had for 3 years now.Arriving in Sri Lanka on the 30th September we spent 2 days in Negombo, a ... read more

Anuradhapura: The Ancient Capital of Sri Lanka We had a trained archaeologist as a guide taking us around some of the ruins of Sri Lanka's Anaradhapura, part of Sri Lanka's famed "Cultural Triangle", but between the speed of his accented English, the length of the names he was saying, and our lack of any framework of knowledge about the history, I was pretty puzzled when I set out to write this blog! Thanks to the internet for clarifying names and details. Please forgive me if I got something wrong. Anuradhapura was named the first political capital of Sri Lanka in 380 BC by King Pandukabhaya. It remained such through to the 11th century AD, roughly 13 centuries. Around 250 BC the Emperor Asoka of India sent his son Arhath Mahinda Thero to bring Buddhism to Sri ... read more

After what seems like a silly amount of time we finally made it to the first hotel - I say hotel, but, I've got a little cottage type thing to myself which is pretty cool - it's been a massively long journey. The transfer from the airport was somewhere around 5 hours, but, between the bits where I nodded off (looking special with my gob open!) I've seen quite a lot of the country, architecture and culture as we've woven around what must be some of the biggest pot holes in the world, had most of my fillings rattled out and been scared half to death by randoms wandering in the road so they don't have to walk through a puddle, buses and tuk tuks! Saw a few monkeys, elephants and cows - they were mostly ... read more

Arrived in Colombo at about 4am after a 10 hour stopover in Mumbai airport. Found a quiet “sleeping” area with couches to try to get some rest but the others resting there spent most of their time on their mobile phones and talking….but did manage to get a few minutes of shut eye. Feroze of Bobby Travels was at the airport to meet us – which was great – he took us straight to our hotel and we went to bed at about 5am – slept straight for 7 hours. Hot and steamy in the middle of the day but a nice walk along the beach late afternoon and a couple of drinks and dinner and then I settled in for a couple of movies. Negombo is on the beach and is only about 10kms from ... read more

We hadn't planned on visiting Anuradhapura, thinking it was too much to cover in this short trip. But, since we had a good day before when we climbed Sigiriya at sunset, and not sun-up on the 28th as originally planned, Anuradhapura came onto our plans. Anuradhapura was the first capital of Lanka. Most of the structures are around 2000 or so years old, give or take a few hundred years. Since it lies in the flat open fields, it turned out to be hard to defend. The invading Chola armies from South India made regular forays and sacked Anuradhapura a few times. The next set of dynasties moved the capital to Polonnaruwa, because it was easier to defend. We arrived in Anuradhapura the weekend before Vesak ceremonies. On the road we saw a perahara (procession) that ... read more

We arrived at Dambulla where we saw a huge Giant Golden Buddha, recent rains had uprooted a large tree so we had to detour down a side road to visit the site. Although Dambulla is famous for its five cave Temples our guide, Jaywa said he would take us to a less visited similar site called Aluvihare Cave Temples near our hotel. This hotel was much more luxurious than the last and we had a little bungalow to ourselves set in a delightful garden full of birds with wild peacocks in the field nearby - it was good to see these magnificent birds in their natural environment. The hotel also had a lovely pool and we spent some time enjoying the surroundings and chilling........ Not too much rest though as in the afternoon we set off ... read more

After spending a day recovering in Mount Lavinia, just south of Colombo, we ventured back into town to catch a train to Galle. Whatever train schedule I had looked up was wrong, and we decided to take a train to Anuradapura instead. It was the most rickety train I have ever been on, but it gave us a sense of people's agriculturally-focused lives outside the city. Most farms appear to be small and family-owned, and there are a lot of different crops (at least in this area). Unlike in most developing countries, Sri Lanka's populations have not flocked to the city; only 25% of the population lives in major urban centres. We arrived in Anuradapura at 9pm or so, and managed to find a decent hotel a little beyond our price range, but haggled them down ... read more

Monday started off as all the other Mondays with tank cleaning and general other duties. After we had cleaned most of the tanks we decided to watch the walkers going by as they were walking to Jaffna in the north to raise money for a new children’s cancer ward. We then decided to go for our usual after tank cleaning paddle/swim. Stan got into the water even though he couldn’t swim and a large wave knocked his glasses off so he couldn’t see either! I decided to swim back to see if his glasses had washed up on the shore, the current was very strong swimming back and took a lot of effort to swim against it as I got back onto the beach I said to Lucy that we should get the others to swim ... read more
