Hi everyone, so I’m back from my amazing holiday to Sri Lanka! I’ll post up the highlights of my holiday as I wrote down what I did at the end of each day in my notepad (didn’t want to take a laptop or tablet). The first thing to say is Sri Lanka is a truly great place to visit and is now well up there with my favourites. The country is stunning; the wildlife opportunities are second to none, there’s so much history and the people are so welcoming. It’s sad to see the country has been recently hit by flooding – I’d encourage everyone to consider the island as a place to visit, you won’t be disappointed and it clearly helps a lot with their development and job creation for the locals. I went with ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling east from Wilpattu National Park to Anuradhapura. We bumped and lurched our way out of Wilpattu National Park in the late afternoon, jumped into a minibus and set off on the final leg of our day-long journey to Anuradhapura, having left Negombo in the early morning. We arrived at our hotel, The Lakeside at Nuwarawewa, around 7pm. We checked in, showered and headed out to Jayasiri Hotel for dinner. We stood outside the small restaurant and watched as our egg hoppers (thin crispy rice flour and coconut crepes cooked in a mini-wok, with an egg in the centre) and kottu roti / chop chop (roti chopped up and stir fried with eggs and vegetables) were prepared on open grills in the open air, then settled inside at a very basic ... read more

We arrived at Colombo airport at some ridiculous hour made even more confusing by a 30 minute time difference. By the time we got through immigration, tracked down our bags on an unnamed carousel and queued for the only working atm we were pretty spaced out. The airport taxi counter was asking a ridiculous amount for the 2 mile trip to our hostel so we went out to look for an ordinary one. Then made the classic rookie mistake of being led away by some guy who had a taxi, we never do this normally but we're so tired we did. Actually it wasn't a total disaster we just had a fair distance to walk before we came to the car but after getting in and realising what we had done I spent the journey in ... read more

Anuradhapura had been the capital of Sri Lanka from around 200BC to 1100 AD. It's legacy are the many Dagoba's that were built to house the earthly relics of Bhudda. some of these rivalled the Pyramids in Egypt in terms of height and wealth contained within them. We had a small disaster on our trip around the temples. At each stop we had to drop our shoes. Unfortunately someone with feet half a size smaller than Shelley's put on her pair and left a par of the same brand. They were a different colour and in much worse condition. One of our packing techniques to minimize the weight we have to carry is only take one pair of shoes. Hopefully the shoes that Shelley has inherited can hold up. My Keen's rock shoes also had a ... read more

Here's some photos from my first stop in Sri Lanka, Anuradhapura. I rented a bike from my hotel to cycle round the ruins of the old town. They made me wear a hat to protect me from the sun which I presume a woman must have left there before. I don't have any pictures of myself with the bike and hat but I was basically riding round these old ruins looking like Mary Poppins. ... read more

Unser Fahrer Toni ist sehr nett, spricht recht gut... read more

As we fly into Colombo we are struck by the abundance of Palm trees a beautiful sight, North is a range of Hills which must be the Hill Country around Kandy, where we will be visiting later on. Hasantha meets us after Passport Control with our Driver and car to transport us to Anuradhapura and our accommodation for the night, we arrive just before dark and take a swim in the pool to be joined by rather large fruit bats flying above our heads! A lovely Sri Lankan curry and bed calls. The morning see's us taking to two wheels to visit of much of this sprawling sight as we can, the ruins of Anuradhapura remains one of South Asia's most electrifying sights, a rich collection of archaeological and architectural wonders. We attempt to make a ... read more

Un picotement doucereux me ... read more
