Sommer, Sonne, Strand. ... read more

Die Ve... read more

From the ancient beauty of the central highlands to the rugged coastal bay of Arugam! A surfers paradise and a travellers refuge, this place was our first stop on our tour up the East coast. As a beginner surfer, I came here for the mellow left breaks that the bay is famous for and that landed me in a surf camp just outside of the main strip of Arugam on a derelict beach south of the main bay. On first inspection, Arugam town itself seemed well developed, with plenty of cool restaurants, accommodation, surf shops, clothes shops and more. On my second day here I went for a full walk of the town and my first inspection synopsis was correct! There are loads of options for food, no matter what your budget. I saw signs for ... read more

Dutch Bay Trincomalee Dutch Bay beach is in town so we are not expecting much, but were thrilled when we saw a beautiful, clean, calm, aqua blue bay with golden silky sand, and when you are up to your chest in the water you can still see the shells on the bottom. It’s divine to swim in. We stay in this new large beach front room on 3rd floor with deck, but no chairs, weird, so we ask and they deliver chairs. We swim, eat and drink cold beer sitting on the deck taking in the view, and watching the dark clouds come in followed by the thunder and lightning in the distance. Very few tourists around and its high season here. We walk the small town waving to all the kids that find us amusing, ... read more

Eller rettere sagt ... read more

So ended up staying in Aragum bay for 4 nights. Stayed in the happy panda guesthouse. Amazing little place just back from the beach, little courtyard with hammocks and cushions! As its off season east coast now, hardly anyone about at all. Only me at my place, basically had a house for 12 pound a night! Still little shops open though and most of the guesthouses and a few extra restaurants. Had a couple of casual cooking lessons from the lady over the road, more than happy to let me have a look. Pretty much only cooking for me anyway! Walked both directions along the beach.... Morning activity ...tick.... Lounged in my hammock and finally got my book finished. Took a surf lesson for a couple of hours, nice easy waves before I go down south. ... read more

I have been in Sri lanka for a month now and am officially a resident here! I got my visa extended on Friday. We are starting to act a bit more like residents as well. I won't get in a tuk tuk (three wheeled taxi) now without considerable bargaining. Its quite funny how stressed we get about an extra 50 rupees which is actually only 25p. One day we got to play how many people can you fit in a tuk tuk and the answer is 6 (they're only made to take 3) so that was a bit of a squish! This weekend we headed up to Trincomalee which is in the north east of Sri Lanka. We hired a mini bus to take us. Google maps estimated it would take 4 hours to travel 268 ... read more

D8 Hot, hot, hot. Once the mist had lifted we were off and onto dirt roads to Polomoruwa and 32 degrees. The ride was steady and pleasant going by lakes and narrow lanes looking at the birds such as, kingfishers, bee eaters?, storks, cormorants, egrets and bitterns, which are perhaps my favourite. A museum and many more Buddhist Temples. One temple had a massive inscribed 25 tonne stone brought 100km from Mihinale in the 12th century – amazing feat. Good trip so far but too many temples for me, even though they may be important to SL history. Great place to ride – ride more. The dirt roads were full of potholes but taken steady they were OK. Saturday appears to be wash day since everyone is in the rivers and lakes, either doing their washing ... read more

D7 The verdict has changed reference the Sri Lankan drivers. We have come to the conclusion that many are reckless and dangerous. This morning we were nearly run off the road by a car overtaking a lorry uphill at speed with just enough room for us to get through – frightening. This afternoon entering Minnetiya John was thrown off his bike by a foolish motorist who came alongside and then swerved across him to enter the fuel station. John had to turn with him and applied his brakes on the wet road so skidded to a stop in a big heap with a battered knee, forearm and hand. The police came and instead of reprimanding the driver tried to encourage John to go to hospital. However, since he did not want to contract some deadly disease ... read more

I got the opportunity to Travel to Ampara, Sri Lanka with the Tourism Ministry to identify New Places and Attractions. This time Ampara, the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. It is still a less commercial area for tourists. However, if you are an adventure traveler, there is lots to discover. Jungles, Mountains, Lakes, Caves, Monasteries, fishing, camping ....etc. You will also find something you don't see often in most parts of the world. It happends in the Gal Oya National Park. Adding some pictures i took. It is truly a beautiful area.... read more
