Batticaloa! Riding through the countryside approaching Batticaloa was like the approach to Jaffna. Destroyed buildings all along the way. Who was there when that roof collapsed? Batti Dutch Fort sentry position

Yes, another Dutch Fort. Didn't they get around!! And they built so solidly that centuries later the forts are still a major attraction.

Unlike Jaffna, where the fort holds just piles of rubble, this fort now holds local government offices.

This Australian eucalyptus tree is now the highest sentinel at the Dutch Fort. How those gums get around the planet, too!

Batticaloa Bus terminal

You may encounter this terminal either coming or going, or even both. Make sure your bus route is over newly "carpeted" roads. We didn't and got here on the bus ride from hell, but that's a story for another day.
